It was an honest question. I didn't know if Port Harcourt was stateside or in Nigeria, so excuse me for not stalking you on your moving thread...

I worked on the Cayos Cochinos research islands (halfway between Roatan and the Mainland)

I do the unnecessary work of a US Consul

you know- assisting Americans overseas

so I'm the guy who visits you in jail and protests your poor treatment when it is appropriate. Ill even bring you magazines

Ill notify your kin when you die over here and repatriate your remains

assist you in returning to the US when you are ill or destitute

produce and emergency passport for you

adjudicate the US citizenship of your kid who was born abroad

help you receive your Federal benefits overseas

assist you with absentee voting

I'm the guy who also constantly thinks about how to evacuate 50K Americans out of places like Nigeria and El Salvador and Vietnam if and when it goes to shit

so I liaise with the local government and DC and the military and commercial aviation and shipping

I investigate and stop fraud and false claims to citizenship and enforce the few immigration laws that actually do help to secure our borders

most Americans will never need me (because who needs to travel when you have cable TV) but those who have needed me have been pretty appreciative

So wait...

Both of you miss the point but please continue to try to paint me as some kind of hypocrite

Just because I am an advocate of small government does not mean I am for NO government - many liberals should try to learn to make that distinction

the consular function is one of the oldest functions of governments outside their borders. and it is necessary not only for the protection of citizens interests but also for the facilitation of international commerce

it is so important to nations that it is regulated by one of our most important international treaties (one that nearly every country in the world is signatory to)

if an American is mistreated by a foreign government I want my government to at least try to do something about it. Thats different from thinking the government participates in our personal lives a little too much, or is a bad steward of our tax revenues

This board doesn't do nuance. Neither do much of the public nowadays. Works perfectly for our two-party racket.

So you want smaller government, as long as it allows you to continue doing your thing. I don't know if that makes you a hypocrite or not, but it does make you just like almost everybody else, conk and liberal alike.

The government gets bigger no matter who is in charge, the distinction that you think you are making is a great sounding talking point, but it doesn't really exist.

The irony isn't lost on me- Ive already said it doesn't exist

Please continue - show me how I, someone who has never been a slash and burn advocate for government reduction- am somehow in an amusing position because I believe that certain government functions - my own included - are appropriate.

Thats my point- I think that of ALL the goofy things our government does (and that it should not do) there are some things that it (and not all governments do this and it is a reflection on how those governments view citizenship) should do.

Can my job be streamlined? Hell yes. We have too many ACS officers in some nice-to-live-in countries.... you can probably figure what countries those are, il mio amico. But if nothing else, when the shit hits the fan in places like Yemen or Cameroon or Liberia, somebody needs to be there to find the Americans and get them on a boat.

You guys might see that as bloat or out of control government bloat (as evidenced in the post I responded to) but I do not. And if someone decides I'm not necessary (as Congress has done twice in the last 5 years by cutting my pay) then I'll move on and do something else where I can serve the public in a way consistent with my view of what government's responsibilities should be. I feel no conflict whatsoever and also reserve the right to point out government waste and incompetence regardless of who my employer is.

Holy Cat Sh!t bat man...

If you are:
Sympathetic to the Tea Party (Check)
A Small Government Republican (Check)
And all the while - have a Government Job (Check)

You really need to have a little more of a sense of humor in matter such as these
Otherwise you just come off as a self righteous dick

Actually my expectations have NEVER been so high as to expect anyone here to take me seriously.

That's why I am never disappointed.

BTW you never really addressed how it is that your view of me can be so up or down while all other things are open to interpretation.

I cannot figure whether you are uncharacteristically myopic for a conflicted conservative (I think this is it), or just a half retarded librul.

I guess I'm just not smart enough to figure you out.
