Having it in their possession is one thing, but knowing how to use it is another. This isn't some simple point and shoot missile system, but a fairly advanced, complex one that a bunch of ragtag rebels wouldn't know how to properly use.

If you are Russia, and you are providing these freedom fighters with weapons that they may not know how to use, you are going to provide instruction and probably a few people to stick around.

Jesus, I've seen Italian soldiers go from, not knowing how to logon to a computer to doing some complex, analytical tasks all within a month.

I deal with HVAC techs all day.

Most of them can't add 3+3 in their head. However, you set a HVAC system in front of them that has 4 different fault codes flashing off they'll pull the wiring apart, diagnose, and repair faster than you can blink.

Documentingreality has some pretty gruesome pics of the bodies, scattered for kilometers around (according to the descriptions), and many still intact but showing signs of a ground impact. You can certainly tell that some of them fell out of the airplane instead of falling with it (most bodies I've seen in airplane crashes are mangled beyond recognition). It was not a good end to some of these people.

One phone call apparently was made at 4:40 p.m. Kyiv time, or 20 minutes after the plane crash, by Igor Bezler, who the SBU says is a Russian military intelligence officer and leading commander of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic. He reports to a person identified by Ukraine’s SBU as a colonel in the main intelligence department of the general headquarters of the armed forces of the Russian Federation Vasili Geranin regarding the shot down plane, which is about to be examined by the militants.

The second intercepted conversation released by the Security Service of Ukraine was apparently between militants nicknamed “Major” and “Greek” immediately upon inspection of the crash site.
