If I worked in the tax department, I would have paid the $6.30 on her behalf a long time ago (or even the $235), rather than do something this unconscionable. I couldn't live with myself selling a home from under a widow for this kind of money.

BTW, this sort of thing is why I am completely against property taxes. Find some other way to fund things.

I understand the rationale behind property taxes but the bottom line is that I don't like a system whereby government can seize somebody's property or tax them out of it. I've seen land rich but money poor people taxed out of their property before and it's not pretty. You should not have to pay money to government in order to keep your property.

It's entirely possible that she never got the notices, or misplaced them. There are instances of letters getting misrouted for decades. This is javertian, and everyone freaking knows it.
