Losing a home over $6.30?

Post by YoUDeeMan »

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/wid ... dge-n91881" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"A widow was given ample notice before her $280,000 house was sold at a tax auction three years ago over $6.30 in unpaid interest, a Pennsylvania judge has ruled."
These signatures have a 500 character limit?

What if I have more personalities than that?

Now, if the debt had been $6.93, a mere 10% more, would the result have been the same? :geek:

Yes, but the punishment is still draconian. How much money did the commonwealth spend to collect $6.30? Sounds like everyone involved in this story is an idiot.

Well, here's a lesson about who really owns your home -- even if it is totally paid off. :coffee:

If I worked in the tax department, I would have paid the $6.30 on her behalf a long time ago (or even the $235), rather than do something this unconscionable. I couldn't live with myself selling a home from under a widow for this kind of money.

The cost to sell this home FAR EXCEEDS the amount owed. What a crime.

I just read the article, if she had 3 notices then the shame is on her. However, courts should exercise some common sense.

not exactly. Someone has to do the paperwork. Process payments, title and deed the property. Nobody works for free.

I was thinking the same thing as I was reading the article.

BTW, this sort of thing is why I am completely against property taxes. Find some other way to fund things.

I understand the rationale behind property taxes but the bottom line is that I don't like a system whereby government can seize somebody's property or tax them out of it. I've seen land rich but money poor people taxed out of their property before and it's not pretty. You should not have to pay money to government in order to keep your property.

Tax sales have fees for processing the paperwork. The govt makes money.

I know I smacked him in another thread the other day, but in THIS case, I'm with Joe. This is a freaking miscarriage of justice.

Don't back me into a corner, V. The point is that doing this over a matter of just pennies just to observe the "letter of the law" is bogus. It's entirely possible that she never got the notices, or misplaced them. There are instances of letters getting misrouted for decades. This is javertian, and everyone freaking knows it.

The PROPER move is to forgive the tax debt. For just $6.30, it's clear that she's not a true "tax cheat."
