First of all, the top 1% didn't "siphon off" anything. When you calculate the income generated you're calculating the income the top 1% generated. Also I seriously doubt that they generated 95% of it.The Senate’s lone independent pointed out during the panel on income inequality that more Americans were currently living in poverty than at any point in the nation’s history as the top 1 percent siphoned off 95 percent of all income generated between 2009 and 2012.
Otherwise: The country is not "subsidizing" Wal Mart because Wal Mart decides on what it will pay given people to do given jobs and those people choose to take those jobs. There is no decree handed down from heaven saying that the country has to provide welfare.
And suppose there was no Wal Mart? Would that reduce the cost of the foolish decision by the people of the US to elect people who will to attempt to ensure the well being of every individual?
Of course not.
Wal Mart offers to purchase a service and says what it will pay for that service. Some people decide to take the offer. It's not Wal Mart's fault if the culture decides to have "welfare" programs.

Re: Walmart on Welfare
Really. Think about it. You have a store and you say you'll pay $1 per hour for someone to come run a cash register at checkout. Somebody takes it.
Are you "siphoning off" anything? Really now. You're the one selling the goods you're selling. And if the person you offered $1 per hour doesn't want to check people out for you they don't have to do it.
That person chose to do the cash register in exchange for you giving them $1 per hour.
This stuff is ridiculous.

Walmart should be happy they recieve this form of subsidy. It pacifies the lazy and working poor (including their own) with cheap trinkets. Without it, they might have to pay more or deal with strikes and unions and such.JohnStOnge wrote:First of all, the top 1% didn't "siphon off" anything. Wal-Mart is successful because it provides plastic sh!t at a super cheap price...
America can't enough Chinese made plastic sh!t
If you want things made out of wood
or of superior design and craftsmanship you literally cannot shop at Wal-Mart
But we don't want that (in droves) we don't want it
We'll line up NOT to get that
What WE want is Chinese made plastic sh!t - and nobody has more of that than Wal-Mart
So they win

Utter nonsense.
This subject is typical of people who believe that people are incapable of making good decisions and that the government must dictate everything in order for us to have a society.
The Weather Channel had a 4 year old kid on today saying that he missed the Weather Channel since big, bad, Direct TV is no longer carrying TWC (because the Greedy Weather Channel wanted more money). Are you shitting me?
The clowns that are saying WalMart is responsible for government welfare would be the same assclowns that would be saying Direct TV needs to carry the Weather Channel so TWC people can make more money.
Want to work at WalMart? Apply for the job if it meets your idea of a desirable job and hope your credentials and interview skills get you the job. Don't like the pay? Don't apply.
Want cheap stuff? Shop there. Don't want cheap stuff? Don't shop there.
It really is simple.

Believe me, I can argue these points as well as anybody on the board...I employ minimum wage workers ...and every time the State of Washington raises the number, it hurts a little. (although they are all high school and college kids).Cluck U wrote:Utter nonsense.

That being said a few things to consider:
Walmart is the worlds largest private employer who counts many above the age of 24 in its workforce trying to scrape out an existence, many of which have children (part of the problem is these people shouldn't be having children but that's another can of worms)
They qualify for welfare. They probably aren't qualified or smart enough to work elsewhere, but at least they're working.
The Walton heirs have a net worth equal to if not greater than the bottom 40% of America.
Payroll is their number one expense, and they benefit from welfare programs supporting their own employees.
Take away the minimum wage or welfare, and their employee's standard of living drops, not to mention they can no longer afford the flat screen tv's and iPhones that they couldn't really afford to begin with. Retail sales drop.
I don't like the minimum wage either but I like Walmart's parasitic behavior even less. Walmart's success is not a good sign of where we're at.

Re: Walmart on Welfare
Right or wrong, for head of households (which means with kids) making minimum wage, an increase in the miminum wage will mean little more than an almost dollar for dollar cut in the government subsidies they receive (and that isn't knocking people that recieve subsidies). So the increase in the minimum wage for families doesn't help those families much but it does shift some of the costs from the government to business and ultimately to the consumer. Not arguing the good or bad, but if you look at the wages of those families that is exactly what will happen (everything else being equal meaning no reduction of employment or hours).
now to the other point, Bernie Sanders is a fucking idiot.

Once again not arguing the rights and wrongs but here is another hypocritical idiot. Didn't he work Clinton who signed like a butt load of free trade deals including NAFTA?Reich added that Walmart, the nation’s largest private employer, paid its workers an average of $8.80 an hour. By comparison, he said, the nation’s largest employer in 1955 was General Motors, which paid workers an average of $37 an hour in today’s money.

Re: Walmart on Welfare
Fewer people are now able to afford Chinese plastic sh*t, so Walmart's financial results are dropping. The slow economy has hit the "Walmart shoppers" the hardest. The Commie Chinese have discovered that higher wages are a good thing, so Chinese plastic sh*t won't be that cheap any more, and even fewer Americans will be able to shop there. "We are Walmart"? Not so much.Chizzang wrote:Cluck U wrote:Utter nonsense.

That may be true, but like Sanders, Reich is talking like an idiot. The difference is Reich should know better. The point is this is one of those issues that, in my humble opinion, is for purposes of demogagory (did I spell that right). The minimum wage issue will really accomplish very little of what its proponents claim. And it will cause very little of the harm, its detractors claim. Politics as usual.kalm wrote:True, Clinton policies hurt the middle class in the long run but I'm not sure if Reich was on board with Nafta.
