This is like charging someone with robbing a bank simply because they were inside the bank when it occurred.

It's no where near the same thing.

People in a bank robbery are victims.
People hanging out at a party are far from victims.

Apples and razor blades.
How are they victims? They didn't get robbed. The bank did.

Or do you mean, "emotionally victimized"?

First of all - she wasn't charged with a crime.

The school rule she broke was being at a place where underage drinking was occurring. Zero tolerance - you cannot be involved in any way, shape or form with a function involving underage drinking.

There is no rule forbidding you from going into a bank.

And when I'm thinking bank robbery - I'm thinking stick-up. If its a quiet hand-over-the-money with a note robbery and people in the bank have no clue it even happens, then I agree they're probably not victims.

Even in that case though, its apples and bananas to me.

She was given a summons for possession of alcohol by a minor. Again, I don't understand why no one is criticizing the cops who didn't just let her go.

According to the article quoted, she was not ticketed.
A North Andover High School honor student, Erin was cleared by police, who agreed she had not been drinking and was not in possession of alcohol.

Quick question for your legaleze....

Do you think the school system is setting a GREAT example for the kids?

The two kids should be applauded:
1: the drunk girl for recognizing she was under the influence, not driving, and calling a friend for a ride
2: the girl who went to help out a friend that was under the influence

Not suspended from school for DOING THE RIGHT THING.

Do you think the school is putting into place the mindset that "oh no, I cannot go help out a friend who is drunk, because I want to play for x team this weekend and don't want to get suspended if I am found to be near alcohol."
"What I'm saying is: You might have taken care of your wolf problem, but everyone around town is going to think of you as the crazy son of a bitch who bought land mines to get rid of wolves."

You're acting like you know the whole story... and you don't
Presently there are only two relevant facts:
1) She was in attendance at an underage drinking party
2) The school has a well publicized no tolerance policy
3) The End

The rest is circumstance conjecture and self pity
Sure she's playing a sad tune for the press and in her self defense (obviously, who wouldn't)

Tempest in a tea pot
Soon this will pass

Yes hey are. I'm just glad my kids are done with it except for 1 1/2 more semesters of law school for my son.

The Education Establishment is completely whacked. You have to deal with it. But it's whacked.

2) The school has a well publicized no tolerance policy
From what I've read and heard she did not "attend" the party. She went to the party to pick up a friend who called her to come pick them up because they were intoxicated.

The second item is the problem. I don't care how "well publicized" they are. The fad involving schools establishing "zero tolerance" policies then acting like robots is whacked. It involves taking case by case judgement completely out. It's stupid. It's stupid. It's stupid.

There's no other way to put it. We really, really need a national movement of parents slapping school system officials back into their place.

Walking in the front door is "attending"
Waiting outside in the car is "picking up"

it's really just that simple
