Not correct. Christie invented the Christie suspension, which was an element of tank design, but the Germans did not widely utilize it.mrklean wrote: We were behind on the Tank. In fact the early German tanks were created by an American
You are thinking of the Soviets, who used Christie's suspension in the T-34, which made it infinitely more maneuverable than the German heavy tanks. The T-34 was the best tank of the war.
The Germans used it in their early tanks, but they were lightly armed and not significantly superior to France's tanks. The difference was their tactics. Blitzkrieg nullified the Maginot Line, and it could have been done with even the sorry tanks we had in the 1930s (which were essentially Model T Fords and WWI era British overtreads).

I love the accounts of T-34's being fitted with their crews off of the assembly line and driving directly to the eastern front to fight.CID1990 wrote:Not correct. During the start of WWII, the French had 3x as many tanks than the Germans. However, the French did not use them in mass as the Germans. The French used their tanks as support for ground troops.

That's what I said.
Blitzkrieg tactics were the departure from the conventional. At the time that Rommel and Guderian put it to use, it would have been successful with even the most inferior tanks.

Oh yeah. I've read some stories and seen interviews of the T-34 at the Battle of Prochorovka (and Kursk). To think, T-34 commanders were trained to specifically fight and exploit the weaknesses (thin armour on the sides) in the Panzer.

The French did the same thing in WW1 with the machine gun. They failed to recognize that weaponry had advanced to the next level.CID1990 wrote:That's what I said.

While we didn't build the tanks, we (the US) did a significant job in terms of giving the USSR tons of equipment (trains, locomotives, aircraft, and most importantly trucks) that let them focus on the tank production. It was a team effort.Ibanez wrote:93henfan wrote:

The Soviets ability to move production as well as they did was an incredible feat that allowed them to churn out weaponry that really saved the day.

Yes it was. I wonder how things would've turned out if the leadership listened to Patton and went for Moscow after Berlin.GannonFan wrote:While we didn't build the tanks, we (the US) did a significant job in terms of giving the USSR tons of equipment (trains, locomotives, aircraft, and most importantly trucks) that let them focus on the tank production. I assume that too, but how would the world have ended up if we defeated the communists, militarily? What events wouldn't have happened (Bay of Pigs, Star Wars, etc...)?mrklean wrote:We would have won.Ibanez wrote: Yes it was. I await Newt Gingrich's book on this subject.CID1990 wrote:It might well be a completely different world.Ibanez wrote: I assume that too, but how would the world have ended up if we defeated the communists, militarily? What events wouldn't have happened (Bay of Pigs, Star Wars, etc...)?
