You bring up a good point. Is it really a deterrent, any more than life in prison? I can't answer that question.

I do know that if it makes the survivor(s) of the victim of a heinous crime feel better to have the criminal executed, I think the death penalty serves a beneficial purpose. Of course, they may also prefer to have the person rot in jail. I guess that's where sentencing testimony comes into play.

I don't think it's a deterrent because of what I stated earlier...
My take is that people that commit such heinous crimes that could warrant a death penalty are mentally disturbed or deficient.
As for knowing it makes survivors of the victims feel better... you can't say that with certainty.
When asked what she would say if she came face to face with her son’s suspected killer, Ferguson kindly replied: “I would tell him I forgive him because, a lot of times, they don’t know what they’re doing. That’s all I’d say.
Presenting him with a Bible signed by the family of the woman he helped kill three years ago in Lake Vista, the victim's daughter in court Friday told a convicted murderer that she forgives him.
“My mother wanted you to know … that we forgive you,’’ James told Mayhew, whose only prior conviction was for marijuana possession. “No one is winning this case. We’ve all lost something. We lost a precious brother and your family is going to be losing you.

“I just feel really sad that two people who I thought was friends found that they had to hurt each other like this. It’s hurting both of our families," James said.

From the bench, Superior Court Judge Christine McEvoy was moved by James's words and her family’s compassionate outlook.

I wasn't implying we should. I was agreeing with G8 that it isn't an effective deterrent as is, and many times just turns into life on death row. Now piss off. :thumb: :coffee:

I Googled this guy we put away and he's 85th or 86th on NC's list. After 17 yrs. Seems like TX, NV, and VA are pretty aggressive with executions but not in NC.

And their wives don't talk back when they ask for a sammie.

You know every time you hear about a woman getting stoned for looking at another man? That's code for "didn't get my fucking sammie fast enough".

Really are you going to tell me how much higher their crime rate is over there? Everyone knows if your going to commit crime do it in the USA and you get a comfy room 3 squares a day healthcare cable and access to more education than most Americans have.

I'm not going to tell you anything about Saudi Arabia, because like you, I don't know shit about them other than they have a really fucked up way of punishing people and repressing women.

Do you really think prison is a bargain?
