Religious goal for me? Trying to receive God's grace.

Almost anything that we encounter during our lives could be considered "brainwashing". Anything.
Brainwashing part is true, but I would rather be brainwashed with rational thought by the sciences than by organized religion.

Wait. Who said that "rational thought by the sciences" is always correct? Scientific results are always being tweeked as more data is collected. At what point should a person believe the results to be the absolute truth? In addition, do you believe that all scientific results are not influenced by human bias?

The fact that science is only good science when it's rigorously criticized and tested and improved and works is the best thing about it and unlike religion, is the foundation of civilization.

You believe it's the truth when it works.

That is what is great about this country we live in. People can have their own thoughts and opinions w/o the fear of being put in jail or killed.

I believe in science and what it proves. But religion is also a very important part of my life.

You do not believe in religion...that is fine. Religion must connect with some people.....

lol religion connects with MANY people! And religion has some extremely important moral values. But wouldn't it be wiser to look for a second at the Bible (assuming you are Christian)? You sound like a very intelligent person, so why do you take it so literally? How can someone put so much faith into some random people who wrote passages 2000 years ago that would be laughed at if written today? I'm not an atheist, so I can accept the concept of a higher being. It's just the concept of organized religion, because it creates problems for certain groups based on some lines written in a book.

Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.

It is contained in chapters 5,6,7 in Matthew.

If you believe in Jesus and what he stood for then this is the cornerstone of your Christian belief.

I do not take everything in the Bible literally. Some parts were written decades after events supposedly happened. I'm sure many stories were embellished. For instance, the Flood. Science has proven that there is not enough water to completely cover the surface of the earth. IMO, this story was probably passed down in stories told to people from generation to generation. It was probably the filling of the Black Sea, which was a large lake before the Mediterranean crashed into it. One of the 'Cradles of Civilization' was in the Mesopotamia. Now is it possible that this filling was the inspiration of the Flood story....maybe. I could go on.

My point is that Jesus was a man that did exist roughly 2K yrs ago and what he said is something that I believe in. Someday I believe I will meet him. You might think this is all fantasy but that is OK, you are entitled to your opinion. But people that believe in him are not lesser people because of that belief. From reading comments about religion on here attacking religion or people that believe in religion, makes me wonder what some of these people actually believe.

In a sense you are lesser people. Your belief in the great myth and any profiteer who bleats biblical nonsense in public, causes you to focus resources away from your own or children's welfare.

The great flood is from the Tigris and Euphrates flooding the area. A natural occurance that couldn't be understood so it was attributed to God.

THe Parting of the Red Sea- they crossed over a submerged land bridge. Of course, they exaggerated the story.

The plagues of Egypt occurred naturally.

Of course, these early people attributed all of this to God, they had no knowledge of science.
Turns out I might be a little gay. 89Hen 11/7/17

2K years ago the landscape was over run with those claiming to be the messiah. This guys claim got legs because it was picked up third hand and written down. Basically this is a recycled Egyptian sun god myth. Our next generation of telescopes should be powerful enough to pick him out on his way to heaven. We know that since he ascended bodily that he is constrained by the speed of light and therefore somewhere within 2000 light years of earth - he hasn't even left the galaxy yet.

Call me silly, but I think that that Asia was part of the Earth 2,000 years ago, so they were, indeed, part of the landscape. Just because Christians like to not include others in their little God Homecoming party doesn't mean others don't exist.

Funny sh*t when Catholics have to explain what happens to people who never had a chance to hear about God. Uhhhh....God still loves them, and I guess they'll have a "special place" in Heaven because God forgot that man hadn't invented TV and the internet back in Jesus' time. Just slipped his mind, I guess.

And the Jews were still around, no? How about Brian?
