Remember NDSUs long history of success!
2011 was at least NDSU's third year of playoff eligibility. The fact that you were getting your asses handed to you in your first two years of being playoff eligible doesn't erase the fact that NDSU was still eligible.
It was our fourth? 1 every 4 years would be nice, but that wont be enough for this team.
Lets look at some history to lend perspective to the NDSU achievement. The Montana Grizz, a formally dominate FCS team is a good team to look at.
The first time we see the Montana Grizzlies, affectionately known as the bad bison because they cant stop an option attack, in the playoffs is 1995, 17 years after they were established. Since then the bad bison have amassed an impressive 2-5 record. This gave the perception western FCS football was weak because that record speaks more to the quality of the competition in the BSC and West in general than it does to the quality of the program. The perception is Montana was simply the best of the runner-ups.
Here is the record:
1995 won Good start guys! What a hoot!
1996 lost
1997 lost
2000 lost to an option team
2001 won
2003 Knocked out of playoffs by NDSU BISON
2004 lost
2008 lost
2009 NDSU BISON become NCAA playoff eligible
2010 Not in playoffs because of D2 games at WGrizz stadium
2011 NDSU BISON WIN FCS NATIONAL FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP!
The BISON are changing the perception about western football, winning impressively in the MVFC competing with the eastern teams, staying away from lower division schools, winning when it counts and winning the FCS Championship in only their 4th year of competition. The NDSU BISON are Champions and have an impressive 9-3 record in national championship/Bowl games.
In addition the Champion NDSU BISON have the divisions best traveling fan base and play in the prestigious and Insanely popular Fabulous Fargo Dome. The phone is ringing off the hook as schools accross the country attempt to book The BISON!! Its a big payday for both.
Just having NDSU play at your school lends a terrific bragging right!
