Probable 2012 Rule Changes
http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/pub ... nce+safety" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
because they concern "player safety" these rules could be put into effect in the next 30 days for the 2012 season:
Highlights-
-Kickoffs move up to the 35 (i.e. same as NFL) and touchbacks come out to the 25.
-If your helmet comes off(except on a facemask penalty), you have to come out for a play - like you were injured & if you're carrying the ball & your helmet comes off the play stops right there (NFL has same rule as of 2011).
-Leaping rule on placements now to carryover to punts as well.

You can sum up the reason for the proposed rule changes with one word: "concussions"

I don't understand the outrage over any of those rule changes - none of them would significantly impact the game. After all the chest thumping about the kickoffs in the NFL, we still had plenty of guys running it out of the endzone so all the paranoia that kickoff returns would disappear was just that, paranoia. I was more upset when they made changes to when and how the clock runs - these changes are so minimal it shouldn't even be noticeable.

I figured they'd be moving the kickoff back up, and I have no problem with that. but why the hell are you messing with the touchback distance? seems dumb.
I'm all for the loss-of-helmet rule. perhaps it will encourage players to buckle their damn chinstraps properly.

Kickoffs moved to the 35...touchbacks move to the 25. Both bullshit rules if you ask me.GannonFan wrote:Which one don't you like? It's going to take more than an emoticon unfortunately.grizzaholic wrote:

Re: Probable 2012 Rule Changes
I'm OK with the kickoff spot, but touchbacks to the 25 will mean more touchbacks as compared to the NFL. Catch it 5 yards deep and you have to go 30 yards to break even instead of 25.grizzaholic wrote:Kickoffs moved to the 35...touchbacks move to the 25. But then again, this is FCS football and the dueces are always wild.

Maybe the hope is to deter people from booting it out of the endzone? More placement kicks since the touchback is somewhat of a penalty now?CAA Flagship wrote:I'm OK with the kickoff spot, but touchbacks to the 25 will mean more touchbacks as compared to the NFL. Agreed - why would you aim for touchbacks as the kicking team - if anything, we may see even more returns. People like to complain about change even before they think through what the changes could mean. Just reflex complaining.danefan wrote:Maybe the hope is to deter people from booting it out of the endzone? changes the punting game too, if touchbacks come out to the 25 instead of the 20

But, it that's the case, how do these rules help player safety? It ends up just being change for the sake of change with no other purpose. "Oooh, look at us! We can move numbers around! Re: Probable 2012 Rule Changes
The only way bringing a touchback out to the 25 would make sense to me would be to expand the field to CFL-size, and that's probably not going to happen any time soon. In fact, that may not be possible in some of the older stadia.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Re: Probable 2012 Rule Changes
Was a huge drop in kick returns and touchbacks nearly tripled:GannonFan wrote:I don't understand the outrage over any of those rule changes - none of them would significantly impact the game. "There were 1,375 kickoff returns in 2011, compared with 2,033 in 2010, according to Elias Sports Bureau. And touchbacks nearly tripled to 1,120 in 2011 compared with 416 in 2010. Touchdown returns on kickoffs dropped to nine in 2011 from 23 in 2010."

I agree on the clock rule. The networks increased TV timeouts over the years and then complain they can't get the game into a 3 hr time slot. So what does the NFL do- decreases the amount of football with the BS clock rules they put in 4-5 years back (and 3 years ago in college).

Exactly. They've taken out the clothes line, horse collar, wedge on kickoffs. Now have helmet to helmet penalties, defenseless receiver, and now this..grizzaholic wrote:JESUS **** CHRIST. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of making the changes to deter concussions? If the idea is to have less KO returns, why penalize a team that kicks it through the end zone?
EDIT: Oops. Covered, by like, 15 people already.

All the forementioned rule changes were approved by the NCAA this week. They go into effect this season.
