We could fill a 25k seat outdoor stadium when the weather is nice prior to the start of hunting season. Honestly people don't even care who the team plays early in the season or if the team is supposed to be great. They are there to tailgate and then watch some football.

But once hunting season starts 10k+ empty seats would make the place seem pretty empty and then the weather gets crappy. Reason #1 why we play in a dome is because nobody wants to sit outside in our crappy November weather and watch football for four hours in gusty winds and freezing temps. I've heard our AD singing the dome's praises on crappy late season gamedays.

The new basketball arena is perfect, no team outside of a high major conference needs a huge basketball arena. 5-7k seats is perfect for NDSU's current and future needs.

As for FBS, no school near us is ready to move up and I doubt any conference(except maybe the WAC) would take NDSU alone. NDSU's admin clearly doesn't want to join a league and be a far flung outlier, our AD pretty much said we have no interest in moving up. NDSU's only chance for FBS is if the MVFC one day wants to give it a try and if that happens it won't be anytime soon.

Fargo is one of the windiest cities in the US, Missoula isn't even the top 100. The difference in wind is significant. If you lived here for a year you'd realize it quickly.

In Sept., & Oct. you are dealing with 57 & 45 degrees respectively so I assume with the 13MPH wind the windchill must be pretty tough to take?

Besides nobody is starting to raise funds yet, its still a pipe dream, but some things do seem to be lining up. Certainly we are arriving at agreement on how many seats we need in the new stadium. I take that as a positive step forward.

Yes that is a possibility. It's one that many of us went over last year when the BCS conferences looked to be lining themselves up to have four or five super conferences. It's also part of the reason why I say that a move up to another FBS conference now is gonna seem pretty pointless if you will not be able to get into a BCS conference.
