2009 - Temple; National Champions

1996 - Rutgers; 1st round loss
1995 - Navy; Home for Thanksgiving
1994 - None; home for Thanksgiving
1993 - None; home for Thanksgiving
By my count that's TWELVE FBS games they've played since Montana started our 17 year stretch of playoffs. All that preparation has gotten them a total of FOUR playoff appearances, and before this year they'd made it to the semi's exactly ONCE. In that same timeframe the Griz have 17 straight playoff appearances, 7 NC game appearances, 2 National Titles and a slew of semi-final appearances.
I don't know about you, but I DEFINITELY see a connection.![]()

That is the main problem with playing an FBS, you might lose. If UNI had scheduled a lesser FCS team and won they might have been in the playoffs.Appaholic wrote:Agree....you'd have to be blind not to see how playing Iowa helped Northern Iowa in the playoffs this year.....D1B wrote:

No but playing the Sooners, in this theory, should have prepared ISU to win the Big Sky. One could argue that no one on the FCS level was a deep or strong as Oklahoma.JMU DJ wrote:putter wrote:

Did ISU beat Oklahoma?

Just sayin, again, that all the teams that beat FBS opponents were in the playoffs this year.

They beat the FBS opponents in the first or second game of the year. What was it that prepared them to beat the FBS opponent if it was the first game of the year?JMU DJ wrote:putter wrote:

Playing the FBS didn't hurt any of the teams that won the game it probably did help them rev up for the rest of the year but it did a lot of damage to most of the 4 loss teams with the FBS game.
The answer in case you are still wondering is that TALENT & COACHING gave the teams that took out FBS opponents the victory.

Huckleberry, while you were jacking off, slamming Mad Dog 20/20 and smoking KOOLS under the bleachers with high school kids, I was actually playing the game. You go up against bigger and better teams and you get better. Then, when you have to go up against a big and maybe better team like Montana, you are ready. Is it the only thing that contributes to a team's success, Joltin Joe? Of course not, but it helps. Maybe provided the edge that Montana needed the last couple years.AZGrizFan wrote:Well said, Obe-wan.Ursus A. Horribilis wrote: They beat the FBS opponents in the first or second game of the year. Montana is good but until they get out of that half assed conference and then play someone good OOC, they will be perennial bridesmaids, or worse. It's actually fun, now, watching their misery.

As opposed to UNI, which can't even get out of their conference.
But, expertise noted. Now shut your fucking yapper about anything military-related. Deal?

That is pretty much true in every sport. I find it comical that a coach with a NC under his belt says that playing an FBS helped his team, and the coaching geniuses on this site are telling him he is wrong.

Re: How Playing an FBS Team Prepared Villanova to Win the NC
Food for thought:
Indianapolis Colts - 8 consecutive playoff appearances (2002-current); 1 Title
San Antonio Spurs - 12 consecutive playoff appearances (1998-present); 4 titles
Montana Grizzlies - 17 consecutive playoff appearances (1993-present); 2 Titles
Detroit Red Wings - 18 consecutive playoff appearances (1991-present); 4 Titles
**longest current MLB streak is 3 years
So, The Grizzlies are on the same pace as the Indianapolis Colts.
Conversely:
EKU - 10 consecutive playoff appearances (1986-1995); 0 titles
UNI - 7 consecutive playoff appearances (1990-1996); 0 titles
Dallas Mavericks - 9 consecutive playoff appearances (2001-2009); 0 titles
Chicago Blackhawks - 28 consecutive playoff appearances (1970-1997); 0 titles
Atlanta Braves - 14 consecutive playoff appearances (1991-2005); 1 title
Minnesota Vikings - 26 playoff appearances; 0 titles
This has no relevance to this discussion. Just thought it was interesting.

Team make ups aint the same. There are too many other variables. Key players get injured. Weather. Whatever. The general point is better competition is good for teams. You want to turn this into a UNI thread, go ahead, but you're still an ass for arrogantly creating this utterly stupid thread. You exposed your limited fan-only knowledge of the game.AZGrizFan wrote:I've never said he was wrong. I just wonder why it didn't help him the other ELEVEN times they played an FBS team.
