Detroit's problem is bloated, inefficient, incompetent, vastly overpaid management.

Lots of foreign companies, automotive and otherwise, are thrilled with the productivity of their American workers. The only reason there is a UAW is because of piss poor management.

We need to be exporting parasitical useless management jobs, not productive direct labor jobs.

The reason there is a union is because of CORRUPTION.

I'm sure there are good and bad managers. I'm sure there are good and bad employees, but the days of The Jungle are gone for the most part. There will always be corruption, but the Unions have outlived their use with all the federal laws. You can't fart at work without it being discrimination. those days aren't really "gone" - just different... the plant my dad works in is a shit hole... i've been working with union organizers to get a union in there - but the company (target) is pouring on the effort to stop them

Now, back to the machinists. The machinists fucked everyone over.

Especially if you consider the fact that Boeing promotes from within and trains employees on the job for other positions. Then, when someone finally achieves where they want to go in the company, they strike? Because Boeing spent the time and money to train them - making them ever more employable elsewhere?

TTBF, I know companies still dick over thier employees(trust me, i'm experienced) but that doesn't mean that a union is perfect to remedy the situation. In fact, IMO, the Union should be working FOR the individual company. A happy worker is a productive worker and like it was said, they are a third party (and they need to go).

Good point, but the issue was with the Salt Lake lab, which is not union. My union experience is with the Seattle lab where I am based.

Really glad for the lower part of the state. The upstate nailed BMW (Who also pays well) but they have slumped like most auto makers. Also, the North American headquarters for Michelin in the upstate. That is why I don't criticize the French.
