We need to be exporting parasitical useless management jobs, not productive direct labor jobs.
The reason there is a union is because of CORRUPTION.

I'm sure there are good and bad managers. I'm sure there are good and bad employees, but the days of The Jungle are gone for the most part. There will always be corruption, but the Unions have outlived their use with all the federal laws. You can't fart at work without it being discrimination. Eventually, karma catches up with you and you go the way of Madoff and Enron. I'm sure there are pros and cons.

those days aren't really "gone" - just different... the plant my dad works in is a shit hole... i've been working with union organizers to get a union in there - but the company (target) is pouring on the effort to stop them

lots of places with hourly workers are still dangerous, treat their employees like shit, pay them below what they're worth...

I am in the curious position of working at a lab within our company that is union, even though I am not. We purchased the lab about 6 years ago.

My take on the union workers where I work:

They are some of the laziest, I don't give a rats ass employees in the company. Maybe it is inherent to Seattle, but the union workers in my company do not portray the traits of good employees. They are always on some type of break, watch the clock like hawks and just plain don't give a shit because they know they can't be canned for poor performance.

Now, back to the machinists. The machinists fucked everyone over.

Especially if you consider the fact that Boeing promotes from within and trains employees on the job for other positions. Then, when someone finally achieves where they want to go in the company, they strike? Because Boeing spent the time and money to train them - making them ever more employable elsewhere?

This liberal manufacturing manager agrees with you on unions. My dear old Dad, a former plant manager put it perfectly when he described unions - they are an interfering third party to progress.

Capn's dad was right in his description of unions today.

It's too bad they've lost their purpose of doing good for the working man.

Very well said.

TTBF, I know companies still dick over thier employees(trust me, i'm experienced) but that doesn't mean that a union is perfect to remedy the situation. In fact, IMO, the Union should be working FOR the individual company. A happy worker is a productive worker and like it was said, they are a third party (and they need to go). :twocents:

Not so fast, my furry desert rat amigo. The government has ALWAYS served the wealthy white male, almost exclusively. Think deeply and thoroughly about our economic and social histories. What's different for the past 50 years is that other constituencies (read non-whites) have been agitating for their share of the American pie, much to the displeasure of the country club set and the party (singluar) that most accommodates them, the Conkpublicans.

There are thousands of examples, too, Z. Tacit government support of Jim Crow laws for decades, institutionally-supported segregation (schools, military, public accomodations, the railorad and oil and lumber and cattle barons who were in bed with the government for eons, etc, etc, etc, ad nauseam.

Good point, but the issue was with the Salt Lake lab, which is not union. My union experience is with the Seattle lab where I am based.

Hey, mister revisionist historian, I'm talking about TODAY. Aren't you the same POS who lectures people about "living in the past" when we discuss the military in referencing WWII or Korea or Viet Nam? At the VERY least, don't be a hypocrite.

And, FYI, I am NOT wealthy. I wish I was so I got all those supposed advantages the government heaps upon wealthy white males....must have missed that flyer. :coffee:

Hey, first, I'm glad you acknowledge those past abuses. Second, I agree with you on how we use the past - except when someone is trying to paint an accurate picture. I didn't drone on and on about it like some here do.

Regardless, you must admit that my point is the truth.
