Enroll the entire population in the ACA for the time being without any out-of-pocket costs, and send out a monthly check to cover basic expenses for two or three months.

Probably the best published information we have so far is from the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Center (ICNARC) in the UK. Of 165 patients admitted to ICUs, 79 (48%) died. Of the 98 patients who received advanced respiratory support—defined as invasive ventilation, BPAP or CPAP via endotracheal tube, or tracheostomy, or extracorporeal respiratory support—66% died.

Compare that to the 36% mortality rate of non-COVID patients receiving advanced respiratory support reported to ICNARC from 2017 to 2019.

If you can't make your payments, go to your landlord or lender immediately. If you can, keep making them. I'm fortunate in the sense that this has caused me ZERO negative financial impacts. I can and will pay my mortgage on the 15th. My friend whose husband quit his job in February, forcing his wife on 2 work two jobs just to make ends meet and now is in dire straits b/c those two jobs were waitressing are the ones that need the stimulus money and help.

I want to add that the US is very much a socialist state for large sectors of the economy and rich Americans. If anything, we have one of the most egregious examples of socialism ever implemented in that it takes from the middle and lower classes and funnels money upwards.

I'll blame people who continue to vote for politicians who support private prison systems, the expansion and militarization of police departments, voter suppression through loopholes, harsh penalties for minor crimes, and making laws and court systems barely navigable for common folk.

Also slavery is still legal in the US per the 13th Amendment. Putting someone in prison for non-violent offenses, giving them no political voice while inside, and making them work for privatized profits IS slavery. These injustices are on us as a society.
