again
The point isn't necessarily about Hitler being fascist or neurotic or a pathological liar
It's about how a guy that NO PARTY WANTED wins his way into office
The Republicans HATED Trump and yet here he is...
To a German that has some "I told you so.." all over it

because apparently you've been triggered (using Trump fan lingo)
But the similarities cannot be argued
Trump was being vilified more by Republicans 2 and a half years ago
than by any Democrat and we were told NOBODY wanted him in office
Even down to his own administration calling him an idiot in public
and not concealing their distaste for him
The mirror images run deep

With a couple of notable (and crucial) exceptions
insofar as Hitler was a populist then the parallels hold true... and the comparison can be applied to numerous Presidents we have had before
But evoking Hitler is dumb because people don't do it to accuse Trump of being a populist - they do it to compare him to an antisemitic mass murderer
If we want to make a more accurate comparison the meme should be an Italian saying Americans no longer ask him how Silvio Berlusconi could happen
Oh.. yeah I guess Trump, like Hitler, plays to people's fears. That's a unique political strategy for sure ..

Agreed. I've always said that Trump is very much like a Berlusconi - more attached to his personality than to any ideological leanings. People who compare Trump to Hitler tend to be people who don't have a good understanding of history and just want to find something awful to say about Trump because they just don't like him. I suggest calling him a buffoon, that seems to fit.CID1990 wrote:

Not his political affiliation
Trump - as Republicans have been busily re-writing - at the time destroyed his own party
and was absolutely seen as some dark horse comic book character
Nobody will every be able to say "gee how could that nutball get elected anymore..."
Is just a plain old fact right now
The fact that Republicans are circling back around Trump and sucking his dong is another story entirely

And how Trump got elected versus how Hitler rose to power couldn't be anymore different. Trump was a household name and a celebrity who won by being caustically kitschy in the campaign and debates and was surprised he won after doing the same thing in other campaigns. Hitler was a minor bit player in a backwater German province and was pretty much the opposite of kitschy while using organized violence to stifle and eliminate his opponents while planning and organizing a genocide and global domination through military conflict. No matter how you try to craft it they are not even remotely the same. It is possible to hate and despise Trump without having to resort to the idea that he's a Nazi and the second coming of Hitler. No matter how many memes try to make it so, Trump is not anything like Hitler.Chizzang wrote:The comparison we're discussing is about "how he got elected"GannonFan wrote:

The comment we're debating is not related to tactics or motives
You're the one running ten miles down the road to stunt the observation
The observation is legitimate regardless of how far you run to end around
From the outside way over in Germany and Europe
They are stunned that a self proclaimed Nationalist pathological liar could subvert the system in the U.S.
During the process 7 months prior to the election
Trump was given a 2% chance
and was being ridiculed by both parties severely
And yet here we are...
The observation is real

Actually Mao Zedong may be a better example since he is looked to as the father of the communist party in China and Obama was/is looked up to as the savior of the Democratic party.89Hen wrote:What such anomaly? Trump is most definitively not looked to by the majority as some hero of the Republican party, no matter how much they currently shine his shoes.

Firstly: Trump pissed off Conservatives considerably more than Liberals 2.5 yrs ago
That's a HUGE measure of distinction Republicans are working very hard to whitewash right now
and serves to illuminate the original POINT of this observation
Secondly
It's not about Stalin or Idi Amin
It's about how a pathological nut can waltz through an established political system
and get elected and become beloved in the midst of political chaos
and this German guy who says quite seriously and rightly so...
That Americans can never call out Germany in regards to "how" somebody gets into power
