This is when I knew I was going to enjoy Sam Harris...

"President Bush has claimed, on more that one occasion, to be in active dialogue with God. If he said he was talking to God through his pancakes this would precipitate a national emergency. I fail to see how the addition of pancakes makes the claim more ridiculous.."

Harris can be hilarious

Furthermore, Bush could start holding meetings to discuss what God told him, in which case it now qualifies as a bono-fide cult.

You might be surprised at some of the people that talk to God, and believe that God answers them. One man's spiritual answer, might be another man's coincidence. If someone believes this or thinks it's a cult, I really don't care. I just don't judge someone based on their faith. It's their actions I watch out for.

There's a lot to dissect in there Gil ^
1) No it does not surprise me that people talk to God, programming (brainwashing) is powerful
2) Thinking God is talking to you through daily events is picking and choosing what to believe is magical

If someone doesn't value logic, what logical argument would you invoke to prove they should value logic..?

You say you don't judge people based on their faith
and yet that is all that humans do - we judge - everything thing is a judgment a measurement a calculation
Think about it for a second... It'll come to you

Gil, What you're saying is you judge them favorably or less severely
that is what people mean when they say "They don't judge" something

:coffee:

They're saying
I've done the calculations already and I judge this as... X = not harmful or X = no big deal
or most likely here as in your case, you do the exact same behavior and so it's obviously okay

I have no idea what God wants... nobody does

But if you believe God is all powerful
Then statistically speaking God wants 29,000 children to die every day - give or take a few thousand

I actually do know what I'm saying, contrary to your judgement. I'm saying if someone told me they were Muslim, it would not matter, if someone told me they are Christian, it would not matter, if someone told me they were Atheist, it would not matter. I don't go around and tell people they are full of crap because they believe this way or that way or not at all. I don't call their faith magic, Santa Claus based, or BS, everyone has the right to believe the faith or non-faith they want, even if it's different than what I believe.

I find it completely fascinating
Andy, it doesn't hurt my feelings when somebody says something with conviction

Gil believes religious faith is sacred and untouchable
I think it's just like any other belief and open for logical debate

it's about the only thing he and I disagree on

He can say whatever he wants...
All decision making is a form of judgement - it's how the brain works - judging measuring calculating
It's all judgement

Saying: I don't judge
is just a cliche' phrase that is used to express that a judgement has already been made
and it requires no further action or additional consideration

It's like saying: I don't see color or race...
It's just a cute way of avoiding the process of logical debate and announcing you're not racist

:geek:

Words... anyone can use 'em
If I say: I have decided not to choose does that mean I didn't make a choice..?
