I have no issue with you being proud and secure in your faith. However, don't be like my cousin who:

1) Puts down others for their faith
2) Talks 24/7 about their faith
3) Talks about the Bible as if he wrote the damn thing ( and grossly misinterprets it)

This guy told my father and his father(my uncle) that their mother was going to hell. This was 1, maybe 2 days after she died. My father bitched him out, cursed him out in front of my uncle and most of the family. What does my uncle do? He picks up where my dad stopped and continued. This guy told me he couldn't perform a blessing for my daughter b/c we "don't have a relationship with God, like he does." This fucker thinks if you're Catholic - you're going to hell. This Southern Baptist-bred fuck nut is the problem with religion. He's exclusive and insincere. He's also had zero religious training, so I'm not sure how he's qualified.

Shit - I went to Catholic school and took several religious courses all through college. I grew up in a strict, religious household that understood the bible to be Allegorical and that some of the "laws" might've made sense in 10 AD but are just plain wrong by any modern standard.
Spoiler: show
I saw him this past weekend at his fathers house. He started into that same old bullshit. His new wife is equally fanatic. But all I had to say was, " If you believe in the Bible like you do, then you have to believe that the 1 true Church is the Catholic Church. If you understand your faith, you know it stems from a mans attempt to get a divorce - not some overall issue with Church catechism. Therefore - you belong to a false church with a view that was designed to justify one man's attempt to go against the true church that Jesus ordained. Further more, what's a Music Appreciation major going to save my soul when he doesn't understand the history and nature of the Bible itself? What does it say when a person like yourself owns a church and you got married somewhere else? What does it say when your church is losing "parishioners" left and right? Your message, delivery and understanding of Christian theology is flat out wrong." He got blush and said goodbye. Fuck him. As soon as he left, his dad laughed.
Back in High School religion class, I remember a priest saying something to the effect of, "the Bible in the hands of an uneducated man can be a very dangerous thing." I think your cousin is what he was referring to.

It might be real but. Anything might be real. Dragons might exist. I didn't attempt to disprove the existence of god. Just that the ascension story isn't very believable.
To you sure, that may be the case. But that doesn't make it irrational.

That's exactly who he is referring to. He fails to understand the bible, it's creation (the historical context), the people who created it, etc... He took a 1 week class in Miami.

Perhaps not. The planet Kolob is not irrational to Mormons, thetans are not irrational to Tom Cruise.

Did I say I have disproven God exists? I don't think it can be proven or disproven. It's beyond reason.

I said I was a Christian and that Christianity is inherently irrational.

I believe in God - but, not in the sense of a bearded man in the sky who chooses who wins the Super Bowl.

Trying to "prove" or "disprove" God's existence is missing the point.

You mean it's not God's will that the Eagles won? Or Jose hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 9th to win the game?

It's not. But God is always the reason a team wins, makes the important catch, etc...

Funny how God is never the reason a team loses or misses a FG. :coffee:

My first two interactions with organized religion went as such:

1. Nutty Baptist neighbors approached my mother about sending me to Sunday School. I was about six. My mother had a guilt trip and put me on the bus (appropriately a short one) with the neighbor kids. I was terrified the entire time. They gave me a little cardboard piggy bank type thing to collect money for the church. I went back the second weekend, frightened again, with my little piggy bank thing full of change. A kid on the bus jacked my change to put in his box. I never went again.

2. A few years later, some kids on my regular school bus route asked if I wanted to play basketball at their house. We had fun for several days of after school basketball. One day out of the blue, the kid who lived at the house says, "can you believe that some stupid people believe that humans evolved from monkeys? huh huh huh!" I told him that I was one of those people, and that he was a fucking idiot if he didn't know that evolution is the real deal. This became a scene. He went in his house and came out with his dad and a pamphlet about creation. I wasn't convincible. That was my last time there.

Exactly. It was God's Will.

Which is another stupid, arrogant comment. How can we possibly know it's God's will? Or even assume that we understand God's will? Using God-given reasoning, how can a benevolent God allow such terrible things to occur? It's usually tragedies that people say that to "console" a grieving person. "Oh it's God's will that 5 year old got cancer and died a slow, agonizing death." STFU! :tothehand: It seems irrational to suggest God's plan for a child was to only be here for 5 years and then die of a rare cancer. It seems irrational to suggest that the plan for my Uncle Charles was to be killed by a drunk driver as he walked home one night in 1966. If that's the plan God had - that's pure evil. :twocents:

Brandon had a great tournament. His swing was a combo of Floyd and Azinger. Horrible to look at it but solid through impact. Bunny was a hell of a player.

I like Religion. I like the sense of peace and meaning that it gives to people like my parents. I enjoy the history of religion.

I don't enjoy the bastardization of it.

I went to Stations of the Cross with my folks on Friday evening. It was 40 minutes of my time and I didn't mind it. I did it mostly to make the most of my time with my sick father. But it gave him peace and comfort. If that is what helps him, i'm all for it.

People like my cousin, who I mentioned above, can take a flying leap. They butcher and bastardize the message of the Gospel w/o any real understanding of where the message is coming from. They don't understand how their comments affect people who belong to traditional, organized religions. People, who for the most part, won't say anything to you about their religion, unless you asked. If there is one thing you should take from the Bible (and therefore religion) it's this: We are a community of imperfect people in an imperfect world. The best thing we can do is take care of ourselves and others. Take care of our world. Taking care of others helps ensure peace.

Maybe God's plan is far more reaching than you think. What occurs to one person can affect many others. Maybe God's plan is to "test" those in the blast zone.
For example, maybe God wanted your uncle at that time. In the process of taking him, he affected the life of the drunk driver and his family (possibly others) that were given a chance to alter their lives because of his actions. Maybe he never had a drink again, or maybe he ignored the signs and drank himself to death. Maybe his children learned a life lesson that they carried on throughout their lives. Maybe a hard worker got the break he needed through a promotion after the drunk driver lost his job because of it. Lots of possibilities, lots of degrees, lots of girls in bikinis.

No, you are missing the point. Maybe his number was up and he had to die somehow. Maybe God's plan was to take him in a way where he could "test" a targeted group of people. I'm just throwing out the possible reasons of why bad things happen.
