This guy told my father and his father(my uncle) that their mother was going to hell. This was 1, maybe 2 days after she died. My father bitched him out, cursed him out in front of my uncle and most of the family. What does my uncle do? He picks up where my dad stopped and continued. This guy told me he couldn't perform a blessing for my daughter b/c we "don't have a relationship with God, like he does." This fucker thinks if you're Catholic - you're going to hell. This Southern Baptist-bred fuck nut is the problem with religion. He's exclusive and insincere. He's also had zero religious training, so I'm not sure how he's qualified.
Shit - I went to Catholic school and took several religious courses all through college. I grew up in a strict, religious household that understood the bible to be Allegorical and that some of the "laws" might've made sense in 10 AD but are just plain wrong by any modern standard.

I said I was a Christian and that Christianity is inherently irrational.
I believe in God - but, not in the sense of a bearded man in the sky who chooses who wins the Super Bowl.
Trying to "prove" or "disprove" God's existence is missing the point.

Re: Political memes, Posters, Funny Pics, Etc.
My first two interactions with organized religion went as such:
1. Nutty Baptist neighbors approached my mother about sending me to Sunday School. I was about six. My mother had a guilt trip and put me on the bus (appropriately a short one) with the neighbor kids. I was terrified the entire time. They gave me a little cardboard piggy bank type thing to collect money for the church. I went back the second weekend, frightened again, with my little piggy bank thing full of change. A kid on the bus jacked my change to put in his box. I never went again.
2. A few years later, some kids on my regular school bus route asked if I wanted to play basketball at their house. We had fun for several days of after school basketball. One day out of the blue, the kid who lived at the house says, "can you believe that some stupid people believe that humans evolved from monkeys? huh huh huh!" I told him that I was one of those people, and that he was a fucking idiot if he didn't know that evolution is the real deal. This became a scene. He went in his house and came out with his dad and a pamphlet about creation. I wasn't convincible. That was my last time there.

Which is another stupid, arrogant comment. How can we possibly know it's God's will? Or even assume that we understand God's will? Using God-given reasoning, how can a benevolent God allow such terrible things to occur? It's usually tragedies that people say that to "console" a grieving person. Brandon had a great tournament. His swing was a combo of Floyd and Azinger. Horrible to look at it but solid through impact. Bunny was a hell of a player.
Did we at least beat Idaho? They were our rival.

I don't enjoy the bastardization of it.
I went to Stations of the Cross with my folks on Friday evening. It was 40 minutes of my time and I didn't mind it. I did it mostly to make the most of my time with my sick father. But it gave him peace and comfort. If that is what helps him, i'm all for it.
People like my cousin, who I mentioned above, can take a flying leap. They butcher and bastardize the message of the Gospel w/o any real understanding of where the message is coming from. They don't understand how their comments affect people who belong to traditional, organized religions. People, who for the most part, won't say anything to you about their religion, unless you asked. If there is one thing you should take from the Bible (and therefore religion) it's this: We are a community of imperfect people in an imperfect world. The best thing we can do is take care of ourselves and others. Take care of our world. Taking care of others helps ensure peace.

Maybe God's plan is far more reaching than you think. What occurs to one person can affect many others. Maybe God's plan is to "test" those in the blast zone.Ibanez wrote:Exactly. It was God's Will.kalm wrote:

It seems irrational to suggest that the plan for my Uncle Charles was to be killed by a drunk driver as he walked home one night in 1966. If that's the plan God had - that's pure evil.

For example, maybe God wanted your uncle at that time. In the process of taking him, he affected the life of the drunk driver and his family (possibly others) that were given a chance to alter their lives because of his actions. Maybe he never had a drink again, or maybe he ignored the signs and drank himself to death. Maybe his children learned a life lesson that they carried on throughout their lives. Maybe a hard worker got the break he needed through a promotion after the drunk driver lost his job because of it. Lots of possibilities, lots of degrees, lots of girls in bikinis.
