Re: 8 - 0 SCOTUS Ruling - There Is No Hate Speech Exemption
When I was in grad school at Penn State in the early 90's, I encountered several profs who made it clear that any disagreement with their political views would have a negative impact on the students' final grades.
I never encountered that at The Citadel, even though most of my profs (political science) identified as Democrats.

Yeah I had some pretty liberal profs whenever I ventured into the Poli Sci department for a GPA boostCitadelGrad wrote:When I was in grad school at Penn State in the early 90's, I encountered several profs who made it clear that any disagreement with their political views would have a negative impact on the students' final grades.

Those were lively classes but I never felt that my grade would be affected over a political disagreement

Even though most of them identified as Democrats, they were pretty moderate. The most liberal was Liberal Larry Moreland, but even he thought of himself as a moderate. Guys like Davis, Arcilesci, Boykin and Steed liked to call themselves Jeffersonian Democrats. You don't find many Dems these days who will identify with slaveholder Thomas Jefferson.CID1990 wrote:Yeah I had some pretty liberal profs whenever I ventured into the Poli Sci department for a GPA boostCitadelGrad wrote:When I was in grad school at Penn State in the early 90's, I encountered several profs who made it clear that any disagreement with their political views would have a negative impact on the students' final grades.

Guess nothing's changed in the last few decades...most of the craziness on campuses goes on in the northeast and west coast.CitadelGrad wrote:When I was in grad school at Penn State in the early 90's, I encountered several profs who made it clear that any disagreement with their political views would have a negative impact on the students' final grades.

I just remembered we did have one rabid Marxist. His name was "Commie" Kingston. They only let him teach American National Government, though.

LOL. Get back to reality. You see more censorship and snowflakery coming from the GOP and the Trumpanzees than you do liberals.
Back to the topic - good ruling. Speech isn't always nice or clean, and maintaining the First Amendments means some will get uncomfortable.

Indeed. Great points.UNI88 wrote:I agree that something has changed. I just don't think that it is a recent phenomenon. IMO, the change started gradually but has been picking up steam. And in many ways it is just a manifestation of the polarization of American politics. BLM/Occupy and the Tea Party are just two sides of the same coin. Too many people are getting their news/information from sources that just reinforce their own thoughts and prejudices and they refuse to listen to or consider alternative points of view. Maybe it started with the birth of the Web and has grown from there. It would be a fascinating study to try and determine the factors influencing polarization and the places where it is having the greatest impact.Chizzang wrote:

Some of this is also a push back against consolidation of news sources and establishment media too frightened to perform real journalism and call out the power elite and advertisers. Occupy was bound to happen after we were told to believe in perpetual growth. Or consider Chris Matthews championing the war in Iraq.

Progressives look out for all.
Republicans wake up every day worried that someone, somewhere, is getting something they don't deserve.
Democrats wake up everyday worried that someone, somewhere, isn't getting something they need.
