When I was in grad school at Penn State in the early 90's, I encountered several profs who made it clear that any disagreement with their political views would have a negative impact on the students' final grades.

I never encountered that at The Citadel,even though most of my profs (political science) identified as Democrats.

Guys like Davis, Arcilesci, Boykin and Steed liked to call themselves Jeffersonian Democrats. You don't find many Dems these days who will identify with slaveholder Thomas Jefferson.

Something has changed... perhaps only my perception

I agree that something has changed. I just don't think that it is a recent phenomenon. IMO, the change started gradually but has been picking up steam. And in many ways it is just a manifestation of the polarization of American politics. BLM/Occupy and the Tea Party are just two sides of the same coin. Too many people are getting their news/information from sources that just reinforce their own thoughts and prejudices and they refuse to listen to or consider alternative points of view. Maybe it started with the birth of the Web and has grown from there. It would be a fascinating study to try and determine the factors influencing polarization and the places where it is having the greatest impact.

Some of this is also a push back against consolidation of news sources and establishment media too frightened to perform real journalism and call out the power elite and advertisers. Occupy was bound to happen after we were told to believe in perpetual growth. Or consider Chris Matthews championing the war in Iraq.
