I did, but didn't Obama give him the boot because he yelled at a woman or something like that? Well that and he was not appointed by Obama.

I don't think he served under Obama but that was a funny incident.

He was a member of PNAC and neo-con wonder boy so congrats for liking his foreign policy.

Hopefully, the Donald doesn't bring in any established right wing hacks. Newt is brilliant but is a secret society bum, as is sessions. Christy is just (very large) baggage, and Gulianni makes my skin crawl.
He need to surround himself with a cabinet of independent minds who see the failed policies of the last puppets who held those positions.

Bolton doesn't have a "foreign policy"

He's not the President.

Bolton's personal beliefs on policy are immaterial- if he's secstate he'll do what he's told. And I'm just guessing here (as is everyone) but I have a hunch that Trump's foreign policy is going to be anything BUT neoconservative.

When I say he has FP chops I mean he is an experienced diplomat and he's shrewd. He does remind me a lot of Lavrov - smart, and a fighter for the interests of the United States.

Trump could prove me wrong, but I see us pulling away from the world police role- even in places where we've been ensconced since the end of WWII.

I really hope Trump pulls us back. It is in our own strategic interests to do so. The best part though- the most delicious prospect- is going to be when the left, in the process of resisting Trumps every move, suddenly discovers their inner neocon and argues that we simply can't pull back... to many places depend on us for their democracies or something

So Trump...with zero foreign policy experience, won't take advice from Bolton?

Trump has already applied the tough guy rhetoric to foreign policy and has also made overtures to Putin.

I get the strong man appeal of a tough SoS but isn't that contradicted by suggesting he will take orders?

Bolton was plain and simply wrong and still thinks he's right on the largest FP experiment of my lifetime. He's also applied that framework to Iran. He's a libertarian except when it comes to military intervention.

Sorry, but he gets no pass because he will supposedly just do what he's told. No one from the Bush administration or who belonged to PNAC should be allowed close to our FP ever again.

It would be like hiring Norv Turner as a head coach in Dallas because he'd do what Jerry says.

He's as shrewd as Lavrov and I think they would respect each other. Both Clinton and Kerry have been dismissive of Lavrov and that's not how you make headway with cold war era Russians

Would be among the smartest moves he could make. Remove most ground troops from Europe and cut the number overseas bases in half. More self defense, less empire.

With the money saved from the defense budget we could hire the extra troops to build that wall between Texas and Oklahoma. :coffee:

The part where you think Trump is suddenly going to start taking the advice of other people, for starters

I'll leave you to stew and reply with your uncle houndawg. I said what I had to say. Bolton is a neocon in the same vein as Hillary- who ALSO did not shape foreign policy outside of arguing that we should decapitate Libya

Phew...so I was following just fine. Neither you nor I know how much Trump will listen to different views. I'd lean toward not very well but at least he listened to his campaign staff enough to stay off twitter for a few days.

Regardless...I don't like anyone associated PNAC or the Bush Doctrine anywhere near FP decision making.
