Science will determine that. Plenty of examples of things that we thought were safe turned out to be very bad for our health 30 years down the road. You probably ate copious amounts of lead when you were a child and now there is no going back.

In the meantime, I don't see a problem with a local government wanting a food supplier to provide simple information on their labels.

How many studies have to show no adverse effect before it becomes settled science? I'm sure that lead-based paints and fuels weren't as rigorously studied as GMO products have been.

As someone who has recently been quite involved in farming due to my distillery biz....many people would be shocked what farmers (REAL farmers, not backyard farmers) have to do to/for their crops if they are using non-GMO. Knowing what I know, I'll take GMO crops any day.
Same goes for organic, which is the biggest marketing crock-o-shit since New Coke

Tweaking a few genes in a tomato to make it grow bigger isn't going to magically give you cancer. Get a grip.

And then there are those pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, surfactants, etc. that a farmer needs to use if he plants non-GMO...

Of course we would. Just from your own reasoning that "alter anything from it's natural state, there will be side effects" mentality, you are already assuming that there are side effects and until we know all of them (uncertain how we ever determine if we've ever deduced everything that could happen when making a change) you'll assume the worst. That's why we have these conversations and why we will continue to have them because we can't ever prove anything to be 100% safe so some people will continue to doubt then.
