Coastal Carolina to move to the Sun Belt

There have been tweets and articles circulating that we will get an offer. And apparently, an article was released by the Sun News, where it names a source, but was then removed. Stupid journalists.

Yes, congrats. FCS and below are dying and will not offer football soon.Baldy wrote:Welcome to the Belt, Mark.Ibanez wrote:There have been tweets and articles circulating that we will get an offer. Any FCS that has the opportunity and the capacity to move up should do so immediately.
Money will keep FBS going for a while, but it's a matter of time for them as well.
We're witnessing the beginning of the end for college football as we know it.

In fairness to Coastal....when they host CSU we won't bring more than 1000 or so. An FBS game vs App or GA Southern might bring far more. From both sides. But who knows.

Damn!! I hate to see Coastal go. You guys usually beat us...but it was a fun little rivalry. Although...with CCU and Liberty gone...CSU probably will be BSC Championship contenders more often.Ibanez wrote:Yeah, I just saw the tweet. Well, that's it. We're gone. Bye Felicia!

Where is Liberty going? I have mixed feelings about is leaving just as we were becoming competitive.bucs90 wrote:Damn!! I hate to see Coastal go. With our departure, LU will be top dog followed by CSU and GW.

Am I wrong to be surprised by this? No offense to Coastal folks, but your institution doesn't appear to fit the bill... even amongst Sun Belt schools.... enrollment, attendance, facilities, etc..
However, I suspect population and enrollment growth are looking way up. Ultimately, this is probably a very good move whether or not success in football is achieved. In the football crazy south this could lead to greater visibility and positioning of CCU within the educational community of SC.

Re: Coastal Carolina, Eastern Kentucky Contacted by Sun Belt
It really doesn't. Only one current Sun Belt school has a smaller enrollment than CCU (Louisiana-Monroe) and every single one of them (even Idaho!) averaged higher attendance than Coastal's current facilities can even hold. Do they have real good reason to expect an explosion in attendance with new seats, or is CCU just blindly hoping Joe Moglia's pocketbook will somehow solve everything?biobengal wrote:Am I wrong to be surprised by this? Coach's checkbook isn't a consideration. It's not part of the equation.Mvemjsunpx wrote:It really doesn't. At the moment, the addition of Coastal is more about basketball and Olympic sports more than football. The Sun Belt is stuck at 11 teams playing unbalanced schedules. CCU has a a high ceiling and football is a bonus. They have a couple of years to sell the idea, raise money, and prepare for the move. In the non football sports (non transitional sports), CCU will come in and compete immediately. Baseball is CCU's best sport and traditionally the SBC is one of the best baseball conferences in DI.

I've heard they are pretty determined to move up as well. If CCU goes in doubt LU stays in the Big South.Ibanez wrote:Where is Liberty going? I have mixed feelings about is leaving just as we were becoming competitive.bucs90 wrote:

I will say...a Sun Belt with App, GA Southern, Coastal....quite intriguing.

I'm interested to hear the plans and see the changes. I feel as though we're moving too fast, I mean, we just started becoming a competitive FCS team.

Dear Beach Chickens,
Congrats on getting into the Sun Belt. I know this happened very fast and you probably don’t know how to process all this, so I’ll give a word of advice to you. Get rip-roaring drunk tonight, preferably with other people. You only announce an FBS move once. And then call a cab to get home.

Wow so it's official huh? Good luck CCU we will be rooting for ya. South Carolinas 3rd FBS team!
It's a major shakeup for the Big South...as I truly think this guarantees Liberty is gone. Either to FBS or another FCS league. Makes me wonder if the Big South will look to expand now.

They're fooling themselves over a number of things -
Georgia Southern will be a more natural rival to CCU than ASU - GSU will be harder to top, and they are much easier to dislike. Oh, and after a CCU-GSU game in COnway, none of the local Hooters will be inhabitable for weeks afterwards
ASU has been going backwards, not forwards. CCU will own them within 5 years
I don't think the furmans and the El Cids and the Elons have been laughing at CCU. Especially since CCU is something like 6 or 7-1 against them. In fact, this blog post qualifies as more "laughing" than any of the other schools have done

We have an impressive winning record against the SoCon. It sounds like the SBC fans travel pretty well, something that is seriously lacking in the Big South. Coastal travels very well. At the CSU games, we outnumber the Bucs, easily.CID1990 wrote:A typical 'we're the center of the universe' App State blog post

God, no more CSU games. That's kind of bitter sweet. I enjoyed them coming to town every other year.
No more games where we have to watch that horrible, embarrassing pirate ship. Have you guys seen this thing? Maybe bucs90 has a picture. It's embarrassing.

If you had told me 10 years ago Coastal would be one of the next five FCS teams to move to the FBS I would've laughed at you. Coastal has really made some great strides in athletics and I have no problem with them being added. There are probably some people in Lafayette and Atlanta that aren't real happy about this but Coastal will shut those people up in time.
