Why do we have to take away an at-large if we take away the PFL bid? I used to think exactly half the field had to be auto and at-large, but haven't we had 11 autos and 13 at-large since the PFL was added? Why can't we have 10 autos and 14 at-large?dbackjon wrote:89Hen wrote: So you think one of the PFL's would get an at-large if they didn't have the auto?
No, they wouldn't.
The playoffs were expanded to accommodate the PFL. Another at-large was also added.
Now if you want to argue that there are TOO many autobids, and you would like to strip the PFL and take away an at-large bid, and shrink the playoffs, go for it. But to make any real difference, you'd have to get down to 8 auto-bids and 8 at-larges.
How do you view the PFL?

We could - at least half have to be at-larges. But my point was that an at-large was added specifically because to the PFL.89Hen wrote:Why do we have to take away an at-large if we take away the PFL bid? So what harm is there to have them keep it?

More spots were added to keep the number of autos in line, but they are in fact taking up a spot they wouldn't otherwise get (at-large).dbackjon wrote:We could - at least half have to be at-larges. Oh OK. I'm still fine with it.UNI88 wrote:PFL = Pioneer Football League.JohnStOnge wrote:I'm fine with the PFL getting an automatic bid and it did get a team to the championship game.
I agree with OL FU, the Dayton Rule is worth a discussion. The PFL is a a result of the rule.

Yup.... the Dayton Rule is worth a discussion ...
And, I'm to the point now that further expansion of the play-offs by any combination of auto-bids/at-larges is fine and dandy. If we have to wait a month for the finals, let the "Top 8" wait for 2 weeks of play-in rounds to determine their opponents.
I think much of this is a silly argument. Football players at some "non-scholly" FCS schools get better financial aid packages than ballers at "65-scholarship" FCS schools. AND, this is BS (Before Stipends <--coming soon to a school near you).
It's Thunder-Dome, baby.
