Possible reduction in crime which will be less court cases, a smaller prison population, etc...

Of course, college should be more affordable i.e. Something that doesn't saddle you with debt.
College SHOULD be more affordable. But the debt part is just a way of life. If you don't have the money to pay for tuition, then you will have to take out a loan, apply for a grant, etc. Tough shit.
There are a lot of people that don't have the cash to start a business, but they do so by borrowing money. Same thing.

But colleges are spending waaay too much money in the recruitment of students. It seems that ODU does a major upgrade to dining facilities every 10 years or so, with another major project upcoming. JFC, it's the same burger and fries whether it's wrapped in paper or served on a silver plate. And the NFL needs to start paying colleges some money for their farm system. They should pay the conferences the cost of a scholarship for each player that is signed to a contract, from that conference, from the previous year. The conferences could then divide up the money per their bylaws, similar to TV money disbursements. This would reduce student fees for many schools, and for the schools that don't have student fees, the money can be directed to the academic side of the house.

You shouldn't have to go into serious debt for something that our culture requires. If you want to increase your chances of success and a comfortable existence, you need an education. In todays world, that requires post graduate education. We haven't made it affordable. Not everyone needs a 4-yr degree.

The avg college debt is around $30k and salaries are down. Kids should be steered toward usable degrees like business, science and less of the humanities.

Actually, any of the engineering disciplines are the most worthwhile. I'm learning how to code right now because of the necessity in the modern world.

And before JoltinJoe chimes in with the, " i paid for my Ivy League education by waiting tables" crap, that's impossible in 2015. Hell, in the 1990s.

From the article:
The Education Department says the program would be open to prisoners eligible for release — preferably within five years.
I'm not sure exactly what this means. Does this mean prisoners with less than 5 year sentences? Or does it mean anyone whose sentence will end in the next 5 years?
Either way, if you have a 3+ year sentence, there's a good chance you did something really fucked up. Or you are an asshole that repeats minor infractions. I just don't see how they would be deserving of something for free that is so costly and coveted by hard working people.

But putting that aside a bit, what is the quality of the education they would receive? Would it be equivalent to and online education that quality employers laugh at, or would it be something else? What is the value of that education, coupled with a felony, that will open doors for you afterwards?

I agree with you. It should not be that expensive. But it is and Obama wants to offer it for free to the poorly behaved. :ohno:

Any education?

What if I want to get a PhD in rocket science...are you saying I should get that free? How about medicine...why can't everyone become a doctor for free? How about a lawyer...I should not have to pay to get a law degree?

Man, you are awesome.

And I bet you are going to let everyone golf for free? Everyone should be able to get out of their homes to enjoy a day on free and open land, right? It should be free because being outdoors is an important part of a healthy lifestyle...it provides a natural balance for city dwelling folks. Surely you can agree to that. Free golf for everyone...equipment and all!

And fishing should be free...no licenses needed. Access to water should be free...not drinking water...recreational water. Sorry, New Jersey, but those shore fees should be gone. No private beaches or bay front property anywhere.

Everyone would be better off with things being free.

Yup, I like where this thread is going.
Nailed it!

Free sailing and poolside tapas parties for all!
