It's now 66 days until kickoff of Catamount football against the Mars Hill University Lions in E.J. Whitmire Stadium on September 5th in Cullowhee.

To help pass those long summer days until football season officially starts, and to hopefully get the Catamount faithful more excited about the upcoming season, we'll continue the 100 day football countdown each day until kickoff day arrives.

Utilizing the 2015 Preseason Football Roster, #66 is Ryan Matson

David Reeves

Title: Special Teams Coordinator/Safeties

Email: David.Reeves@nau.edu

Bio

• Enters his fifth season as the safeties coach and special teams coordinator, and has 18 years of experience overall in the FCS and FBS levels.

• Helped shape four-time All-American and two-time All-Big Sky First Team honoree Lucky Dozier into one of the best safeties in NAU history. In two years at NAU, Dozier recorded 134 tackles, 21 pass breakups and seven interceptions. He started every game during his tenure at NAU and earned the team’s Most Valuable Defensive Player award each of his seasons with the Lumberjacks.

• In 2013, helped coach NAU to its first Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoff appearance in 10 years.

• NAU led the FCS in defensive touchdowns with eight in 2013. The Lumberjacks finished first in total defense (348.3), pass defense (190.8), passing efficiency defense (107.7), opponent first downs (17.7), opponent third-down conversions (34.9) and opponent fourth-down conversions (29.4). NAU was also second in scoring defense (22.0). The Lumberjacks finished eighth in the FCS in opponent fourth-down conversions, 13th in team passing efficiency defense and 18th in scoring defense.

• In 2012, NAU finished first in the Big Sky in pass defense (203.7), and ranked second in scoring defense (23.6) and total defense (342.5).

• In 2011, the Lumberjacks led the league in scoring defense (19.8), rushing defense (93.5) and sacks (33), while ranking second overall in total defense (306.6) and pass defense (213.1). NAU was fifth nationally in rush defense and among the FCS Top 25 in sacks (10th), total defense (14th) and pass defense (22nd).

• In Reeve’s first season, Matt Estrada was named the team’s most valuable defensive player, defensive backfield player of the year and outstanding junior en route to earning All-Big Sky First Team honors. He anchored one of the best defensive units in school history in 2010, earning All-Big Sky Second Team honors, and signing as a free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars in July 2011.

• Reeves has helped produced some of the nation’s top special teams units during his time at NAU. The Lumberjacks ranked in the Top 16 in the country in both punting and field goals in 2010 behind the play of punter Drew Zamora and kicker Matt Myers. NAU kick returners led the league and ranked sixth overall in the FCS at 24.3 yards per return.

• During Reeves’ tenure with the Rocky Mountain Bears he tutored a defense that steadily improved each season and produced numerous all-conference players each season.

• RMC defeated Montana Tech for the first time since 1999 - ending a 16-game losing streak to the Orediggers - and wrapped up the season with back-to-back victories over Eastern Oregon and Montana Western. The Bears ranked second in the NAIA in passing offense (323.0 per game), fourth in sacks per game (3.5) and ninth in field goals made (.769).

• Prior to arriving at Rocky, Reeves spent 15 years coaching at the Division I level. He started his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Montana, after he finished his playing career in 1987 under then defensive coordinator Jerome Souers. Reeves coached 10 All-Big Sky first-team performers, including 1996 Big Sky Defensive MVP Jason Crebo. He was also a member of the Grizzly coaching staff that guided the 1995 team to the Division I-AA National Championship.

• Joined the Utah State staff in 2000, where he became the assistant head coach and linebacker coach for the Aggies. While at USU, Reeves’ linebackers earned All-Big West first-team honors three times. Two of his linebackers, Jesse Busta and Brent Passey, ended their careers as the schools’ third and fourth all-time leading tacklers.

• Was a four-year letter winner at Montana, and a two-year starter as a strong safety. He earned the team’s Most Inspirational award as a senior in 1987.

• Graduated from Montana with a degree in history in 1991. He married the former Sara Mates and they have two children, Matt and Sam.
