Big difference between flying the flag of the country you came from and flying the flag of a failed attempt to break from the USA. :coffee:

In Texas we learned about the Golden Circle.

One of my trips to Brazil was for this.

There are many videos of festa dos confederados.

Why?

Germany tried to conquer all of Europe. Japan launched a sneak attack the drew us into a war. Both of those country's actions ended up killing millions of people around the world, several hundred thousand of which were Americans. Plenty of painful memories brought up by the flags of those countries.

China commits human rights atrocities every day...as do their people. Ditto Saudi Arabia. Why aren't people pointing to those folks and saying what shitty, redneck people they are for proudly flying their backwards country's flag? :suspicious:

Why can they be looked at as being nice people proud of their heritage when their countries are shit holes that continue to deny basic human rights?

Wait...Confederates were traitors. Gotcha. They were a part of something and tried to leave the US of A. Well, apparently, the concept of America is very similar to the thinking used by Muslin extremists. Those Muslins believe that all the land that was under Muslin rule should be returned to Muslin rule...by force, if necessary. Yup, it is so comforting to know that we, America, have such similar thinking to such a wonderful bunch of peeps. :ohno:

1963?
The Citadel has directly felt the impact of the tragedy at Emanuel AME Church as one of the victims was a Citadel Graduate College alumnus and six of our employees lost family members. The Emanuel AME Church is our neighbor and we consider it a part of our extended Citadel family. We will continue to support the church and its members in their time of need.

Tuesday, The Citadel Board of Visitors voted 9-3 in favor of moving the Confederate Naval Jack from Summerall Chapel to an appropriate location on campus. The move will require an amendment to the Heritage Act by the South Carolina legislature. The board's motion authorizes the Chair of the Board of Visitors and the administration of the college to work with the legislature on the amendment.

The Board of Visitors and I believe now is the right time to move the flag from a place of worship to an appropriate location. We pride ourselves on our core values of honor, duty and respect. Moving the Naval Jack to another location is consistent with these values and is a model to all of the principled leadership we seek to instill in our cadets and students. It also promotes unity on our campus, in our community and across our state during this time of healing.

-John W. Rosa, Lt Gen (USAF, ret) Citadel President

That's all displaying the Confederate flag is, too. Freedom of expression. It's not 1865 any more. And as FU so eloquently stated in another thread, the vast majority of people who display the Stars and Bars today don't do so to offend blacks. When I see the Stars & Bars, I don't immediately think of slavery, the Civil War, or Dukes of Hazzard. And really, if blacks take offense to someone waving the Stars and Bars, that's the BLACKS' issue, not the person displaying the flag.

But, once again, we as a country bow to the whims of the few. Once again, law abiding citizens and society as a whole are impacted by the actions of the .001%. Once again we, as a country, bend over backwards to suck off the minority and go overboard attempting to placate and appease. One racist goes on a shooting spree and SC folds like a cheap piano and will take down the flag. Walmart and Amazon immediately stop selling Stars and Bars products. The Citadel is removing the flag. Suddenly--150 years AFTER the end of the Civil War, the Stars & Bars are "bad" and must be cleansed from our history.

These fucking knee-jerk reactions to one-off incidents....THAT'S why this country is going down the shitter. This has NOTHING to do with the Confederate flag....they're solving a "symptom" rather than the problem....but man, as a country we're REALLY good at that, aren't we? And we wonder why nothing ever changes....

Hey, I agree. I don't see hate when I see the flag. I'm fine with the flag flying at a memorial or in a museum. I don't see the big deal of it being on the statehouse grounds. Removing the flags won't do anything. It will not change the hearts and minds of those that use it as a symbol of hate. There's a woman here that lives in a predominantly black area. She fly's the flag and so her neighbors built fences so that they didn't have to look at it. What was her response? She put in a taller flagpole. It's bitches that like that give it a bad name and ruin it.

It's all symbolic. Nothing more. It's symbolic and in a few weeks there will be another shooting or some cop will have roughed up a black kid and this will fade from page 1.

Washington (CNN)Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has directed that four Confederate flags be taken down from a Confederate memorial at the state capitol.

Bentley's order comes just two days after South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley asked state lawmakers to remove the flag from her state's capitol, and amid a seismic shift on the question of whether the flag should fly on government property, in the wake last week's church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina.

Bentley spokeswoman Yasamie August told CNN that the flags were taken down because Bentley did not want to distract from legislative issues. August said the move will be permanent.
