Fat Americans... (The new normal)
133 million Americans are over weight...
That's a lot of fat people - of which 67 Mil were obese
"67.6 million Americans over the age of 25 were obese as of 2012, and an additional 65.2 million were overweight. Their count was based on data collected between 2007 and 2012 as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, an ongoing study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention..."

Re: Fat Americans... (The new normal)
The problem is that the BMI is a bunch of crap. I've thought about that often with respect to my own situation. But before I get to that I'll use another example. According to the BMI Marshawn Lynch is obese.
Now I'll take my own case because I think about it when I go for my six month checkups and get my BMI stuff as part of that. I think anybody that sees me would think I'm skinny. On the day that my wife took the picture below I weighed 185 pounds. I am 6'1". So on that day I had a 24.4 BMI. BARELY under the "overweight" line of 25.
Meanwhile, the BMI says that I could have been friggin' 45 pounds lighter and been "normal." Can you imagine what I would have looked like 45 pounds lighter? I'd have looked like a concentration camp survivor on the day of liberation.
The BMI is a bunch of crap and it's pretty obvious. It's amazing to me that health authorities continue to use it.
Again: Just look at this picture of me at 6' 1" and think of what I'd look like if I lost 45 pounds. The BMI says I'd be "normal" weight if that happened. It's an absurd index.

But the main thing for this discussion is just look at that as a person. Not me. Just a person. The person, for his height, is 5 pounds away from being "overweight" according to the BMI and 45 pounds away from being "underweight." To me you look at that picture and contemplate that and it's pretty obvious that there are serious problems with the BMI. It's OBVIOUSLY biased towards indicating people are overweight. I have NO doubt that a very high percentage of people in our country are considered overweight due to application of the BMI when they're really not. Also a very high percentage of people are considered obese when they're really not.
Like really. This guy (Marshawn Lynch) is "obsese" according to the BMI:

It's pretty obvious there's a problem with the "measurement" being used to categorize people.

Re: Fat Americans... (The new normal)
JSO is correct. I'm fairly sure if I lost every pound of body fat I have my corpse would be considered obese.
On top of that, there is also research (including a fairly big meta analysis from a few years ago) suggesting people in the "overweight" BMI range actually have the best longevity-better than the obese or the "normal" BMI folks.
That aside, this is still a public health problem that in the short term will be costly to the health care system.

This guy (Adrian Peterson) is overweight and close to obese according to the BMI:

Re: Fat Americans... (The new normal)
Not to be "that guy," but is that honestly the only picture of Lynch you could find? I did a simple Google search and that image didn't even show up, even though there are a million of him in a perfectly normal pose. Just seemed kinda odd that's the image you posted, and a seemingly obscure one at that...JohnStOnge wrote:

Re: Fat Americans... (The new normal)
Yep. BMI is as worthless as tits on a bull. You have body builders, powerlifters, strogman competitors, highland games competitors, Olympic lifters, hard core recreational lifters, pro athletes, etc, basically large volume of muscle people (remember muscle weighs more than fat) who aren't remotely close to 'obese' are labeled obese...Ibanez wrote:BMI is an inaccurate as one can get.JohnStOnge wrote:

John... the study is based on the CDC's BMI + Waist Circum
Which means Lynch is well within the standards and NOT obese
Read the CDC obesity report its NOT just BMI

My doc has a BMI chart on his door but has told me it's unreliable and not to worry about it given my waist size. My BMI puts me in the overweight category, but I'm also undertall.

As soon as you read BMI you can stop reading.
However, there are more than enough fat people in the US, no question about that.

Now I'm going to question your IQ...
There's a difference between the CDC's landing page on BMI
which amounts to an explanation as to what BMI is
and the study which the article references - which is a nutritional survey
"The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey" which actually began in the 1950's at some point
and has continued on since - the report focuses on the survey period between 2007 and 2012
You're either willfully dishonest - which you've shown regularly - or stupid
