And there, in a nutshell, is why Amaro is a failure. He doesn't understand the concept of win-win. There's no point in even wasting your time in business with such idiots. This morning, the Tacoma News Tribune’s Bob Dutton reported that trade talks are going nowhere because the Phillies are asking for either Taijuan Walker or James Paxton in exchange. This does not make sense: Walker and Paxton are probably Seattle’s two best young pitchers, and Revere is kind of not good.
There is setting a high asking price to kick off negotiations, and then there is insulting the intelligence of anyone who’s ever met anyone who can even spell the word “baseball.”

I'll take him at his word on this one since GMs rarely talk about rumors.Asked whether he had in fact sought Paxton or Walker from the Mariners in exchange for Revere, Amaro told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (in no uncertain terms) that he had not.
“Typically we would not comment on rumors,” said Amaro. “But when they reach this level of ridiculousness, I can say unequivocally that what has been written is false.”

Re: Phillies 2015 "Damn, the Season is Long" Thread
Surely you can finally admit, after years of defending him, that Amaro is a complete and utter failure as a GM.

They draw about the same as UD football. Or roughly triple Villanova.dbackjon wrote:How does baseball in Tampa survive?

If only they could manage to field a competitive team.dbackjon wrote:How does baseball in Tampa survive?
It's a damn shame, really. The Rays are a team that is easy to root for. They're scrappy, have no prima donnas...
This area just sucks for sports, period. Too many people from somewhere else. There's no loyalty to the area teams. Fans come out of the woodwork if somebody makes a playoff run, though.

That's cute. Still doesn't mean Amaro is a complete failure. He resided over the best phillies teams since I've been alive, so he did something correct. The fact that you are blind to this is quite frightening. The overhaul has begun and it's most likely Amaro is fired at the end of the season, so cool your titties.93henfan wrote:Here are some absolutes.Seahawks08 wrote:

They had 102 wins the year before. Things like attendance drops lag by a year because fans maintain confidence (or don't gain as much confidence) for the fair weather fans which is why it dropped to 37,190 and then 29,924 in 2013 and 2014. The major increase in attendance also followed the Phils winning the division.93henfan wrote:How so? A .500 club drew tops in baseball in the pic I posted.tribe_pride wrote:Wow! The WS championship was won by Ed Wade's and Pat Gillick's roster, then Amaro came along and has done his best to destroy the franchise, and that effort has been a rousing success. Maybe he's not a failure after all.Seahawks08 wrote:That's cute. Still doesn't mean Amaro is a complete failure. The major increase in attendance came from a new stadium, and was sustained by a World Series championship. It dropped when people realized that the GM has no idea how to succeed. All he managed to do was trade away the entire farm system for a few aging veterans and after he got a couple of good years out of them (but no ring) and the wheels fell off, there's nothing left.tribe_pride wrote:They had 102 wins the year before. It'll take at least five years to undo the damage brought upon the franchise by this hack, and more likely ten.

Don't make it sound like the Phillies traded away a bunch of minor league studs - hardly any of those guys panned out. 2 issues right now - they are playing an over the hill gang lineup that has a bunch of ugly contracts & they've screwed the farm system up for years not developing talent. As the core aged there was nobody to replace them...93henfan wrote:

Amaro has been with the phillies FO since 1998. He was an assistant GM from 1998 to 2008. Thus, he had a role to play with the rise of that WS winning roster.
And let me explain something else: winning a WS is partial luck. The phillies had better teams in 2009, 2010, and culminating in the best phillies roster of all time in 2011. Who oversaw those teams? Oh right. Now back to the luck aspect. Look at the rotation of the phillies teams in 2008 and 2009 where both teams reached the WS and look at the rotations for 2010 and 2011. You cannot argue that the latter were worse than the former even though they didn't make it as far. So keep trying to tell yourself that Amaro was a complete failure when in fact you have very little to stand on.
And now to the point of Amaro trading away the farm system which led to the phils demise. How's Kyle Drabek doing? Worley? Cosart? Singlelton? None of those players would be helping this team right now. All the while the phils kept their #1 prospect (who was once rated higher than Trout) while obtaining Cliff Lee, Oswalt, and Halladay.

Re: Phillies 2015 "Damn, the Season is Long" Thread
So first you point to luck in winning a World Series. Then you don't consider luck (for Amaro) in the fact that Drabek popped an elbow and was never the same and few of the other minor leaguers panned out.
You contradict yourself. You can't take luck both ways to support your guy, who is a complete failure.
Sharpen your pencil and come back later. Does Amaro have pictures of your mom cheating on your dad? I'm trying to understand why anyone would defend the guy who has wrecked our favorite baseball team.

Re: Phillies 2015 "Damn, the Season is Long" Thread
The simple fact is he put the team in the best position possible to win the 2009, 2010, and 2011 WS's, and if they did win those, you wouldn't be saying he's a failure. Not everything was due to Gillick and Wade - who started the process, but Amaro tried to build a short term plethora of WS wins. This is where I think you and I differ: I would sell the farm to obtain players like Halladay, Pence, Lee, and Oswalt whereas you probably wouldn't. I knew the time was coming where the phils would suck again due to those actions but I'm okay with it.
I am not saying Amaro is the greatest GM of all time, but he's not a complete failure like you portray him as. Signing Howard was ill-advised, but as soon as his contract is up, the phils will be flush with cash and hopefully some young players developing into good/great major leaguers. It has already begun as Franco and Asche get more playing time and Nola taking strides in the minors. At this point, it looks as if the Phils will get the #1 pick next year and the players who they get back from the Hamels and Paps trades will also help. And to top it off, Amaro is likely to be canned at the end of the season, so it makes everyone happy.
