but then I spent 17 years of my life watching what "good" people are capable of doing to each other so I may be a bit cynical

I don't agree with the Steven Pinker view that scientific enlightment has caused the decline of violence over the centuries. At least not directly.

I would argue it has more to do with the abundance of food and water and other resources.

And I would think anyone who believes wars are fought more often for interests and resources than ideals would tend to agree with that.
