One of the dumbest things Reagan ever did was attempt to get to a "600-ship Navy"...like it was some magical, mythical number that was going solve all the world's problems. I was in the Navy during the height of that buildup, and saw floating (barely) buckets of steel that NEVER left the pier, as a good stiff breeze would send them to the bottom....but they counted on our rolls as a ship in our arsenal. Some of these leaky buckets had bilge pumps running 24/7 just to keep them afloat. Smartest thing Bush I did was to begin culling these from the rolls, and closing unnecessary and duplicative military bases. Of course, it would have been SMARTER if the government had actually SAVED that money and returned it to the taxpayer, but of course, taht NEVER happens....

Yeah, because no other country has spy satellites to count how many ships we have. :dunce:

For someone that use to be in the military, you sure don't get it. Knowing the number of each ship is nothing. Who cares. What matters is the ISR, C2, C3i, C4i, C5ISR, etc... capabilites that each have. Those are what should remain secret or "for your eyes only" for the people that work on them.

I disagree. I think it should be posted out there MORE. So when some shithole decides to fuck with 'Merica, they will know beforehand what we bring to the table.

Everyone else jumps in to crack a joke; only Mark has a decent argument, and one that makes sense.

The only counter-argument I would have is that some of the larger ships (CVNs, LHA/LHDs, etc.) have personnel that would specialize in this stuff. It would be bad for other countries to have that info.

Then, of course, is THIS argument. If I remember right, THIS was much of the basis of Reagan's 600-ship Navy, which I fully supported. Whatever problems AZ saw (and there's no arguing THAT; you can't argue first-hand knowledge) those pale in comparison to what the Sovs endured, which for the most part we didn't even know about. They were cannibalizing ships for parts to repair others. Morale was REALLY bad for the Sovs in that era. Morale was bad for us, too, but not nearly as much, because we could do at least SOME of what we were trained and paid to do. But grizza DOES have a good "bravado" argument....

 No kidding...it was dumb of the Navy to put all their ships down on paper like that. :ohno:

Now that I know where they all are, I could take some scissors and sink them all in a minute or two.

 The Russians don't need to know the number and type of ships we have to know we have military personnel experienced in certain technologies or certain weapon systems. Your "counter-argument" is moot. And if you don't think that countries don't know about our capabilities, then you must have never heard of RimPac? Hell, I went to a Fleet(Marine) Week for the USMC in Boston about 6 years ago and while they weren't saying exactly what our capabilities were with the COC, you can make good guesses by looking at the components which were on display.

I wonder if they'll get some practice with some Iranian boats soon.
