It'll be a sad day for UND if they have to change. There won't be hockey in Ralph Engelstad Arena anymore. He told them when he was building if, that if the name and logo changed, they weren't allowed to use the arena for the university anymore.

Which logo? The one that is identical to Notre Dame's?

IMO, they should play on the similarities and come out with a line along the lines of the One True UND on one side and University of North Dakota on the other. It would be popular enough with the people that don't like the Domers to make the University a decent amount of money (kind of like all the Ohio St fans who bought Appy St stuff).

Not entirely flattering but true.

It was also in the late 1980s that Engelstad was involved in the biggest controversy of his life. In 1989, he was fined $1.5 million by the Nevada Gaming Commission for having a secret Nazi memorabilia room in Imperial Palace. The fine also was a result of parties he threw in 1986 and 1988 allegedly in observance of Adolf Hitler's birthday.

Engelstad later apologized for the parties and said that the parties were in poor taste.

Kupchella said that while the events took place before he knew Engelstad, they were very unfortunate.

He also did this for UND...

In 1998, Engelstad continued his giving to UND when he supplied the Department of Special Collections in the Chester Fritz Library with the papers of Gen. George S. Patton, which are valued at $1.5 million. The papers were put together by Sereno Elmer Brett, his second in command during World War I, and reflect the General's life from 1918-1944.

The focus of the Wheelchair Foundation Nevada over the past few years has been to help the physically disabled residents of Nevada without mobility or the funds to buy a wheelchair. This effort has been helped enormously by the generous gift made to the Wheelchair Foundation by Ralph and Betty Engelstad to help the State of Nevada. The Engelstad's had previously contributed to the delivery of 2,000 wheelchairs to their home state of North Dakota.

So, yes, he did make some mistakes and having those parties were dumb, but he has done a lot of good things over the years. Additionally, he was never a nazi sympathizer.

Engelstad apologized publicly and an FBI investigation could find no evidence he harboured any pro-fascist political beliefs.

If you guys cant get he the SIOUX tribes to agree with you why dont you try another indian tribe who will? im sure at least one of them would be proud that your university bears their symbol. I think the North Dakota Fighting Iroquois would be a cool nickname and you could keep the same symbol.

Not a bad idea SUUTbird, since the current logo was designed and painted by a Chippewa, but unworkable under the terms of the Settlement. In accordance with the settlement with the NCAA, if North Dakota does not get tribal approval it must comply with paragraph 2.d of the settlement "... UND will announce that its Athletic Department will transition to a new nickname and logo which do not violate the Policy or render UND subject to the Policy".

That sucks. If they were able to change to another tribe's name it should be a tribe with a Plains background though.

I think it would be a great idea if the are forced out of it to go with no mascot/nick name whatsoever. Just be known simply as UND. If you had no new nickname then people would still call them by their old anyway. No name, no logo, no nothing. It would be the most unique thing in college sports.

Then we could call them the UNDies.

One of the tribes voted to allow the university to keep the "Sioux" name.

Hopefully the other tribe in question will vote and resolve this issue soon.

Tomorrow may not be a good day at UND, as the State may take action on nickname....

UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname is on the agenda of the State Board of Higher Education meeting Thursday, and the board may take action on the matter.

The board has the authority to end the use of the nickname but, so far, has asked a committee chaired by board member Grant Shaft to study the matter.

The committee is powerless and at this point has been pretty much a sham. One of those "blue ribbon fact finding committees", who were going to aggressively meet the issue, but only had one meeting in the past 3 months.

The Board controls the decision. 2 of the 8 board members are UND grads. There is a student rep on the board from UND, but I doubt that she would have a vote. There are a couple of others who attended UND, but didn't graduate there. The Chancellor of the North Dakota University System received his masters from UND, which is helpful.

I can see if a school had the name "Indians" but the actual tribal names should be up for grabs. How is it offensive if Florida St's mascot is a Seminole? They dont make the Seminoles look bad or degrade them in any way (unless they lose alot of games). They paint the mascot in a prestigous light. Make him look like a mighty, victorious champion... whats wrong with that?

in FSU's case they have a deal with ALL of the Seminole tribes... they worked out a deal whereupon the tribe has approval on use of their likeness and name... UND, in its hubris can't get the support of more than one or two bands of Lakota (the proper name for the tribe) and they never will.
