No way we would be interested in trillion dollars worth of anything our good friends the Chinese have a near-monopoly on. I don't know where Chiz comes up with this stuff. Maybe the Oct. 2011 issue of Scientific American?

So a "link" is whats required to show that Rare Earth mining rights is a HUGE forefront issue..?
Even though China is responsible for about 90% of global rare earth output
Despite only having a third of the world's deposits located in China
China has controlled (cornered) the Rare Earth minerals production for years
We absolutely have to get in the game
Over the last decade US and EU have used the WTO to control China in this market
How do you thinks that's working out..?
I'm sure a science Article will be viewed as Left Wing voodoo
Especially since "The Pentagon" is mentioned in the article
"The geologists were delivered to the site in Black Hawk helicopters, and armed soldiers watched over them as they scoured the ground for clues..."
"The new rare earth findings are a crown jewel of the USGS's new, 2,000-page assessment of Afghanistan's vast mineral bounty, which will be rolled out September 29 at the Afghan embassy in Washington, D.C. This new science, funded by the Pentagon's Task Force for Business and Stability Operations, also characterizes 24 areas of economic interest, half a dozen of which are world-class mineral deposits in the northern two thirds of the country."

I am not arguing that rare earths are not the new oil. I've actually followed with interest China's push to corner that market. So I'm in total agreement that rare earths are a major issue, and one the Chinese can hurt us with if they so choose. It could even be called a strategic interest.Chizzang wrote:Dude,CID1990 wrote:

We are not still in Afghanistan because of rare earth mining rights, which is what you implied and of course HD toadyed along behind you. BTW Obama is also not a Muslim and there is no tooth fairy, and 9-11 was not a false flag.
I have no doubt we are developing Afghanistan's capacity to produce rare earths. We are also assisting them in just about every corner of their aconomy, just as we tried to do in Iraq. But like I said before, we are doing it wrong because we will come out of Afghanistan with ZERO mining rights for rare earths.
So like I said before, we are not still in Afghanistan because there are rare earths there. If we can prosecute a slow burn war with boots on the ground on the other side of the world, we can just as easily exploit our OWN rare earth resources out west, which we don't touch for environmental reasons.
In a way, the link you provided is depressing in that we performed all that work for China.

Re: UraniumOne-gate
CID,
I believe we have already secured some rights in Afghanistan
and are working on a few more regions inside the country
Those rights are being "auctioned" if you will by the present government-in-queue
exploration lease is the term used to gain access and "advanced military liaison"
is a requirement for exploration leases to be acquired
Side Note:
One of the huge disasters with the 2003 war in Iraq was that France was designing an infrastructure build out for the unexplored regions of backwater Iraq - advanced geological access requires some infrastructural support
Presently there are solar power platforms in development
to which their single design function is to allow off-grid electricity for geological processing plants
this is a business that will boom
We can't explore for rare earth in developed countries because it decimates the earths surface
and poisons the land severely
So we need access to the north 40 in every "STAN"

Any agreements over mining rights not made with the Taliban (who will soon be back in charge there) aren't worth the paper they are printed on.
You're right about the environmental impact of mining for these metals- but extracting oil sands and hydraulic fracturing are bad too, right? I'm sorry, but politically speaking it would be much easier to run a PR campaign talking about how our new technologies allow us to mine cleanly with little impact and then go dig a huge hole in Nevada than it would be to secure an operation in Afghanistan that would come anywhere close to being profitable.
Think about it- we can't even draw oil out if Iraq- a much more friendly country with better infrastructure
Anyone with any knowledge of the dynamic in Afghanistan right now who also has the ability to invest in mining ventures is NOT going to do so. It would be a dumb investment akin to betting the ranch on DeLorean.

Meanwhile: (after that embarrassing note)
America is looking to ever so slightly shift itself away from OPEC control
by increasing Canadian and America production - Mission Accomplished - so to speak
But to your point:
We're getting aced out of every game in town by China
Every time we show our hand on some play China drops four Aces - game over
China likes having control of Iraqi oil processing - flying in the face of our private game
China likes having completely cornered the Rare Earth global operations
Molycorp is pushing the agenda at the Pentagon and inside DC
We love having a reason for using our military and there isn't a better bet
You can be sure the Pentagons Task Force for Business and Stability Operations division
is rounding up more funding as we speak
The STANS its the next theater - get you tickets early
you heard it here first
