Liberty - first FCS program to cover cost of attendance
Sources told FootballScoop tonight that Liberty, an FCS program located in Lynchburg Virginia, will become the first FCS program to provide “cost of attendance” dollars to their athletes.
Following the “power five” conferences’ lead, Liberty, which has been rumored to be looking to move up, is taking the bold step of possibly being the only FCS program to cover these costs, which some estimates project at nearly $2 million to the university.
Sources tell FootballScoop that Liberty has begun to inform their student athletes of the decision and will begin making the payments this Fall.
Turner Gill’s program went 9-5 on the field last season, losing in the second round of the NCAA playoffs.
Will update as more becomes clear. Stay tuned…

Re: will be first FCS program to cover cost of attendance
I haven't been following along with this story. Please help me fill in the pieces.
Is Liberty is going to pay every athlete the same, or will it be tiered?
Will that give the university more/less control over said athletes?
How do the regular Joe students feel about this?
a) Do they even care that monies from their education fees will be given away and not reinvested in the school?

You sure this isn't The Onion?
I for one, even as a Liberty fan, don't approve of this, whether it's Liberty OR the P5. The schollied education ought to be enough....

The rich (Power 5 conferences....and private schools like Liberty) just got richer. What little chance state run FCS schools ever had of getting high end athletes just flew out the window.
On a local level....I wonder how long until Grand Canyon University catches on? They are flush with online degree money as well.

I've been on the campus of many private Catholic colleges (Gonzaga, U San Diego, U San Francisco, Santa Clara, Seattle U, U of Mary, Carroll College) and a handful of midwest Protestant colleges but I have to say that they didn't give me the same "Big Brother is watching" vibe that GCU did.

I was thinking the same thing - they have the same cash source as Liberty - they already buy players overseas, this will only accelerate things.mtjack wrote:The rich (Power 5 conferences....and private schools like Liberty) just got richer. I definitely got the feeling when I was at the NAU @ GCU basketball game a few weeks ago that dissent, of any kind, is strictly verboten on campus.

Yup - when my buddy DJ lit up a cigarette outside after the game, I was expecting floodlights and a crew of security to surround us.

No - because he put it out when I told him we were in a non-smoking campus, but GCU security tried to throw me out of the game because I said a couple cuss words

I'm getting worried about you.

I got my name written down and a warning - one more cuss word and I would be expelled from campus.
One of the security guys looked really embarrassed he was doing this. The other was trying to be Joe Cop.

That leaves a lot of room for learning some creative curse words in foreign tongues.
I doubt either the security staff or the home crowd narcs know Pashto or Ukrainian.

Re: Liberty - first FCS program to cover cost of attendance
For starters, this has nothing to do whatsoever with the Big South or FCS for that matter. This is entirely about FBS and proving that from an organizational and financial standpoint, Liberty is prepared to do what is necessary at that level.dbackjon wrote:So Libertine - what does this mean for Liberty? As for the Big South, the conference can't prevent it from a legal standpoint for anti-trust reasons. The Southland has already come out and said as much with regards to their own member schools.
Honestly, as much as Coastal fans are howling about Liberty doing this, it's mostly because they didn't do it first and I could certainly seem them doing it second...or third, fourth or ninth since Liberty surely will not be the only FCS program to go this direction. Face it, people. Allowing in Cost Of Attendance was the only way that the NCAA was going to survive as a governing body and, now that it's here, COA is going to be the driving force in college athletics at all levels.
