If there weren't any laws prohibiting building dams, the dam would have been built, and a water reserve would be in place.

Yes - because there will always be water to store...

Through big government projects - which I support. You don't see me railing against big government now do you?

It is so funny - you have all these small government types out here - except for the projects that benefit THEM and their pocketbook.

I DEFINITELY don't see you condemn big government. It's going to take big projects to keep California's cropland flourishing as well as provide for the huge mass of people living there, so I'm not really sure why she's an idiot for proposing that. The Cali envirowhackos will no doubt run to the defense of an endangered species of moss, snail darter, or spotted owl to block any attempted government proposal to fix the infrastructure California has gotten itself into. When a state with a GDP larger than some European countries is suddenly down to less than a year's worth of water there was a clear failure in planning to sustain that growth.

The issue is that she is running as a small government conservative (except when it comes to big government projects to bring water to her house).

Despite what T-man blathers on about, the water shortage is NOT the fault of the environmentalists. Water is needed in the delta to preserve it, otherwise you do wreck an entire ecosystem (and not just a small fish).

Some new dams may be needed, but all the good/safe dam sites in Northern/Central California have been built on already. More dams COULD have been built in Southern California to catch rain water, but DEVELOPERS stopped those, because they didn't want to waste land they could put houses on for reservoirs, so a lot of rain runs off into the sea in So Cal.

Many areas have NO water meters, so there is no incentive to save water. Ag could save a lot of water, but they would have to spend some money, and maybe take some land out of service, like any other state would.

Infrastructure DOES NOT EQUATE big government.

And, just to set the record straight, Jon...had the Auburn Dam been built, the flood control problem on the American River would have been resolved so Folsom Lake wouldn't need to be drained and kept at ridiculously low levels.

To be clear, under the late Rep. Bob Matsui's defunding measure, he inserted language that any future projects could only be purposed for "flood control only", specifically excluding dam projects to store water for, "Beneficial use".

You can talk circles forever, but the water resource mismanagement has resulted from envirowhacko advocacy.

I'm not a fan of it, but eminent domain become necessary when situations like this arise. I don't like big government of any type, but I don't think an efficient, streamlined government is too much to hope for (albeit likely impossible). The current levels of self-preserving bureaucracy, the czars, and the unnecessary levels of approvals and red tape make getting anything good for the country take decades in some cases to complete. Dams may not be answer but may be part of it. Desalination needs to become much more prevalent for areas like this that are hardest hit (and helps resolve rising sea level rises due to global warming/climate change :? ). Maybe we need a new version of the WPA, which would provide the labor to complete these projects and also help keep employment at a high level.

You are entirely full of shit, Jon. There are NUMEROUS sites which have been studied and proposed, that have NO VIABLE POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENT VALUE, yet have been buried under decades-long CEQA studies and lawsuits.

Stop fabricating lies to rationalize a failed progressive narrative.

You may consider them viable, but rational people don't

Dams should be a last resort, not a first go to idea - since they rarely pay for themselves, inundate thousands of acres. Try conservation, ground water recharge, wastewater recycling, etc first.

California has done NONE of that.

Horseshit. You don't know what you're talking about. California has codified water conservation measures since the 70's...particularly in building codes. Urban consumption has been reduced to a fraction of 70's levels. Most major cities recycle wastewater through tertiary plants (a state law since the early 90's) for use as non-potable irrigation.

What HASN'T HAPPENED is the addition of any additional storage for the past years, despite the state's population HAVING DOUBLED during that time.
Currently the ONLY proposed SWP (State Water Project) storage project, the "Sites" reservoir, was APPROVED AND CHAPTERED in 1996, but has been buried and blocked by politics and environmental objections for the past 20 years.

Do yourself a favor, Jon...this is a topic you are ill prepared to debate. Rather than pulling a Densedawg and blowing smoke out your ass, go find some gay rights travesty to bitch about.

It's both. Poor planning, poor prioritization of infrastructure funds, envirowhackos, poor use of water....

True. Fuck the developers…and the farmers. The real answer is aquifer/reservoir recharge with recycled water…but the public is too stupid to realize this because they are uneducated on wastewater treatment capabilities. The next (and significantly costlier solution) is desalinization, but we’ll see the envirowhackos sidestepped to get new dams built long before desal becomes a viable solution.
Many areas have NO water meters, so there is no incentive to save water. Ag could save a lot of water, but they would have to spend some money, and maybe take some land out of service, like any other state would.

Not true. All remaining municipalities in CA without water meters must have them installed (within the next 5 years I think). Sac is currently in the process of getting theirs put in at great cost.

California still has little groundwater laws, and very few ENFORCEABLE measures to ensure conservation.

Sounds like I do know what I am debating.

Meanwhile…in Washington State, we're removing dams and restoring the glorious native runs of anadromous fish to their ancient spawning grounds where they will be eaten by bears, and pooped out to provide fertilizer for the next generation of trees.

The Yellowstone is the longest dam-free river in the lower 48. Conks are still doing their best to destroy is with their shoddy pipelines. :ohno:

Meh. It's the large water users that are the issue, but there still needs to me more crackdowns on the stupid water use like watering lawns, etc. I don't waste water, or use it on stupid thinkgs like a lawn, but I won't take the drought seriously until there "water monitors" driving around 24/7 issuing fines for water waste. :coffee:

Redmond has a 15 year environmental restoration project called "Redmond 2030"
and it is AWESOME

It's already a town with more miles of walking trails and biking trails than most cities
and now it's building out it's "Environmental Infrastructure" as the Hippies like to say

And this is very true - I have friends that are serious about water conservation, while their neighbors aren't - so who is going to have an easier time dropping consumption by 25%?
