MEAC reviews Delaware State's league forfeit to face Michigan
The commissioner of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is reviewing a decision by Delaware State to forfeit a league game next year because of a conflict with a big-money contest at Michigan. But the school said it does not plan to play its conference game with North Carolina A&T and fully expects some kind of fine from the MEAC.
"We've already settled it with North Carolina A&T that it will be their victory," said Candy Young-Sanders, the Delaware State senior women's administrator who was involved in trying to solve the scheduling issue. "You don't want to give the appearance that you are chasing money. However, when you have an opportunity (for a guarantee game) and you see the state is making cuts ...
"I'm sure there will be a reprimand of some sort. ... This hasn't happened before."
Asked if she expected the reprimand to include money, she said, "I'm sure."
MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas said he would talk with everybody in the league during his review. He declined to comment on whether he thought the league would try to have the game played or whether there would be punishment.
