Critics of the bill say it violates the Tennessee Constitution and the U.S. Constitution. Article I of the Tennessee Constitution states that “no preference shall ever be given, by law, to any religious establishment or mode of worship.”

But state Sen. Steve Southerland (R-Morristown), who introduced the Senate version of the bill, insisted the proposed legislation wasn’t intended to promote Christianity.

“It is not my intent in bringing this legislation to cultivate adherence to religious (practices) or aid in religious devotion,” Southerland told the Senate State and Local Government Committee. “Simply, my purpose in bringing this legislation is to memorialize the role the book has played on Tennessee history.”

And to remove perfectly normal displays of sexual orientation from high schools:

A bulletin board promoting transgender equality was removed by school officials in Marshall, Michigan in what some students are calling an attempt to silence them, WWMT reports.

According to members of the Gay Straight Alliance — who created the bulletin board to celebrate Transgender Visibility Day — the district removed it not because of a two-week limit on bulletin board space, but because a group of parents on Facebook complained about its content.


Kate Samra, the President of the Gay Straight Alliance, told WWMT that “this was surrounding a Facebook incident surrounding a mother that was very upset. She thought it was inappropriate for the school setting and that it didn’t exhibit Christian values.”

When the gunmen arrived at his dormitory he could hear them opening doors and asking if the people who had hidden inside whether they were Muslims or Christians. "If you were a Christian you were shot on the spot," Wetangula told The Associated Press. "With each blast of the gun I thought I was going to die."

Actually, there is nothing in the Constitution saying that States can't have State Churches, adopt the Bible as the official State book, etc. In fact, a number of States had official State Churches for decades after the Constitution was ratified.

I realize that's dangerous as the Constitution also does not say that States can't prohibit the free exercise of religion. The First Amendment specifically refers to what the Congress of the United States can and can't do. But it is what is is.

If you just read the national Constitution you're not going to find anything saying it prohibits what Tennessee what's to do in this case. That's not to say that the Judiciary wouldn't invent a Constitutional prohibition that's not really in the Constitution. It does that all the time. Also Constitutional requirements that aren't really in the Constitution.
