The private sector is always better at maintaining competition. The FCC is in the monopoly business through it's licensing of TV and radio, frequency and wireless broadband sales, etc., but you want them to be the regulator of market competition in broadband internet? Really? :?
Oh yes…the FCC is a brutal and crushing monopoly! Those poor telecommunications companies suffering under that evil yoke!

Paine would have loved the internet and it's abilities of open discourse and idea sharing. He would have recognized it as an important part of the commons and one of the few things worthy of government protection.
Wow...you really don't get it at all. :ohno:

The FCC isn't a monopoly. It creates monopolies through government privilege. Much like the government did with the ICC and railroads, and later, trucking or the CAB with the airlines. The FCC, ICC, CAB, as well as other government agencies and boards keep competition out and protecting monopolistic behavior.

Yes, Thomas Paine, the "Phampleteer for Liberty" was a huge fan of government protecting his free speech over the airwaves of the 18th century. So big of a fan that he had to escape England after writing the "Rights of Man". There is little doubt that he would be a huge fan of the government regulating the internet.

Sorry I misunderstood where you were going with the FCC. I agree with you there.

But…regarding Paine, do you even have a clue what the Rights of Man was about and why he was run out of town and later convicted? :suspicious:

Paine was especially a critic of monarchical government and the establishment. He was an egalitarian who proposed taxes on the rich to end poverty and promoted a republic form of democracy. You and comcast are Edmund Burke in this argument and I am Paine.

Again, the best argument you have would be government censorship of Paine's ideas at the request of landed money. But Paine wasn't an anarchist, he would have loved a government that allowed the free flow of his pamphlets.

What a turn around, kalm.
Now all of the sudden you don't think today's government props up the establishment and isn't at the beck and call of our version of "landed" money? :suspicious:

What brought about this huge reversal? :?

Yeah, I've never mentioned the establishment and political corruption...at all!!!

Nor did I suggest in this very thread (a couple times) that's your best argument... :)

Speaking of reading comprehension fail.

Again, government is THE establishment, the face and embodiment of entrenched power, and the poster boy of political corruption, but you want them to be the unbiased objective arbiter of internet freedom and fairness.

You have claimed time and time again to be against all those things, but you are tripping over yourself to hand all this power to the people who do the things you hate the most.

I'll ask again, why the reversal? :?

I'll repeat…again…government is a necessary evil…and I'll add "sometimes", just to make you feel better.

I don't have too much of a complaint, but others see it differently.

New Power Grid “Report Card” Reveal Dangerous Vulnerabilities
The power grid just received its “grade card” from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and it barely passed.

The overall rating of our antiquated electrical system was a D+. Major power outages in the United States have grown from 76 in 2007 to 307 in 2011, according to the latest available statistics. The major outage figures do not take into account all of the smaller outages which routinely occur due to seasonal storms.

The American Society of Civil Engineers power grid grade card rating means the energy infrastructure is in “poor to fair condition and mostly below standard, with many elements approaching the end of their service life.” It further means a “large portion of the system exhibits significant deterioration” with a “strong risk of failure.”

and delivered a mediocre (by anybody standards) Broadband delivery system
and then was playing GOD on the very system platform WE The People paid for

Only Bankers Politicians and Wall Street can Fleece the system and get away with it

Occupy rallies were anti-government? :suspicious:

Fuck Comcast. I'm for a free market, and Comcast is doing everything in their power to monopolize the market. You and Chizz are bitching up the wrong tree though. Comcast is doing what is expected of them...gaining market share by buying up every other cable company they can. It's the government's job to keep them from doing so. It is just like I said a few posts back...a monopoly by government privilege.

Except for a couple of off the wall examples, in a truly competitive free market, monopolies just do not exist.

Not only have they been buying other broadband providers (with American funded Tax dollars)
Hey here's some infrastructure build out money
Gee thanks! We're going to buy this other competitor with that money...

as if that we're NOT enough humiliation:
They feel free to charge different usage fees to companies that compete with them
on a supposedly neutral platform built by Americans tax dollars

Comcast is a prime example of a company - through lobby influence - that has not so much "tilted" the Free Market as completely sh!t in the face of it using public funds

Google and Comcast are cut from the same cloth. One is trying to take over the interwebz and the other is creating a surveillance state that makes the NSA shudder in horror. Well if I was a Lobby team member for either - or both - I'd simply buy my way to the top
Except one difference Bro...

How does a Business score the lowest possible consumer satisfaction in recorded history
and still manage to stay in business - heck even thrive...

Google is beloved by many (see kids and geeks) and has a reason they stay in business
They are LOVED

Comcast is hated
and routinely scores ZERO out of 10 on customer satisfaction scores
How could they possibly stay in business..? (Gee I can't figure it out)

I know it's legal, but lay off the reefer. There is no fucking way you're as dumb as you're acting.

Comcast is a MONOPOLY. In every city where there's Comcast, there is ONLY Comcast.
They don't have to have great customer service scores, they are the only game in town.

Oh I'm not suggesting Google isn't villainous...
But there are dozens of Web browsers you can use besides Chrome and Dozens of Search Engines that circumvent Google

There are NEVER dozens of competitors in any Comcast market
because they were funded (by American Tax Payers) to buy them all up - see: 1995 to 2015

Google is where they are because they are loved
I am not kidding - if people hated Goggle they'd use any of the two dozen other options
For web browsing and Searches

I'm NOT suggesting the love of Google is a wise thing - they are an invasive weed
but masses love them - they are hero's to millions of 20 and 30 somethings

Comcast is HATED (period)
and there are almost no other legitimate choices in most markets
and when the day comes - and it will come - Comcast will reap what it has sown

If Comcast was even "pretty Good" and customer service
and was "Pretty Good" at platform neutrality
They would be fine - they would in fact be SET FOR LIFE
But they aren't

In fact they are historically record setting BAD at everything
it is simply Politics (our Federal Government) that keeps them afloat today
