The Apology Crap Again

Post by JohnStOnge »

This time the former OU student on the Fraternity video:

I'd have a lot more respect for people if they didn't do that. I mean really.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Lots of people here would have more respect for you if you didn't spend so much time trying to dress up your racism and general hatefulness in an aura of science. They really would. :coffee:

St. Wrong is a follower of Jesus like Rosie O'Donnell is a follower of diets.

I agree with John on this one...
The preferred method is a direct private meeting with the offended party
Everybody else to fuck off and get a life

The kid had to make a splash commensurate with the exposure and magnitude of his transgression.

He's now on course to change the history of race relations in our nation.

Anybody that was offended for Mo'ne Davis (or offended on her behalf) is an idiot...
and frankly the private apology should be more to her mom and dad privately with Mo'ne there

Otherwise John is correct
however John and agree for completely different reasons

I'll explain:
John respects people who are steadfast and adamantine in their beliefs
He thinks personal honor and stout dignity is more important than actually being honest or right

Its not about "the truth" for John in a real sense - its about the ability to construct a personal truth
and hold onto that truth in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary
The True Believer mind set

I however, in this case think its just a dumb kid who owes one person (or a small family) an apology
and its of no significant consequence how "we personally" might be offended

see how we differ, John and I...

He thinks personal honor and stout dignity is more important than actually being honest or right
I think being honest and right are extremely important. Then, once you are honest and right, be steadfast even when your position (though honest and right) isn't popular. As a practical matter that may not be possible. Like if you have a family to support and being honest and right means you will lose your career so that the people that depend upon you suffer you may have to swallow hard and avoid running too much afoul of the "politically correct."

But that's not the issue here. The thing here is the same old thing we see where someone is caught saying something then because they were caught and it's not popular they apologize. How can you possibly believe the apology is sincere? It's like if you kill somebody thinking you won't get caught then you get caught and you apologize to avoid the death penalty. It has no credibility. You're apologizing because you got "caught." You're trying to save your skin.

Or at least it's reasonable to believe that. So why do it?

Oh that's right: To save your skin.

In this situation, I agree with John. Do you think that the person is really sorry or is he sorry that he was caught and made to look like an idiot?

I think he was sorry that he was caught and made to look like a fool. He may or may not have meant what he really said (may have just been following the crowd for all I know) but the apology was all for show.

Notice how all four of those have a lot to do with and are influcenced by public perception.

"When an angry mob with pitchforks tells you to do something, you either get a bigger mob with pitchforks to defend you, or you do what the angry mob wants you to do."

That's all this is. Pure PR move with no substance. But the idiot, slacktivists of society will pat themselves on the back for "making a difference".

Thanks, I didn't know what drove his public apology or his true feelings on the matter.

So you'd have a lot more respect for him if he hadn't done it?
