Yes Starbucks and Costco and the like have been doing so for years now in the Seattle Market and beyond

But places you might not ever dream would do it have been paying well over minimum around here
Why..? Because they've read the Costco / Starbucks employee statistical reports / Less turnover and Happier Employees - make happier customers

McDonlads in King county has even begrudgingly admitted that everything works better when they pay a better wage - their restaurants run better - go figure.. WHAT A SHOCK - I don't know all the answers but f**king over the peasants isn't a long term strategy that has proven to work... Anywhere (ever)

Our Free Market Master Lord God Emperor Wal-Mart even some day might be forced to appease the peasants
Chizz, consider the demographics of the customer bases of the places that pay higher wages like Costco versus the the demographics of Wal-Mart shoppers.

Costco is much more likely to have the more educated and well-off customers who are either snobby about food or just worry their little heads over food additives, pesticides, corn-sugar, and "processed" foods. Costco succeeds because they have the customer base willing to spend more on food, not because somehow paying employees more makes them better. Wal-Mart on the other hand is much more blue collar and their business model is affordable stuff.

Both business models are valid as you say, but it doesn't mean adopting the Costco model will be good for everyone.

Costco isn't exactly Whole Foods. You can get a lot of the same shit you get at Wal-Mart, just in larger quantities.

It has more to do with the philosophy/politics of Costco's founder/CEO than anything... :coffee:

I will disagree with that. The two Costco's I shop at are both in Central Phoenix - and at least 50% of the customer base is minority. People go to Costco because the products are better, and the service is much, much better - which is a reflection of the better paid employees. And the prices aren't much different than Sam's Club.

Either someone has never been to a Costco, or Costco is considered fancy down south.

My gripe with the minimum wage is paying high school and college kids. There should be an age or experience exemption for stepping stone/entry level jobs.

I'm also surprised at laissez fare/limited government Chizzy on this one. Should it be an employers responsibility to provide health insurance for it's employees? Should it be their responsibility to provide a living wage?

I believe the median age for minimum wage earners is in the mid-thirties, but I agree that summer jobs for high school kids shouldn't have to pay a living wage to somebody still living at home.

I'm explaining how things are here in the PNW (Pacific North West)
I don't particularly care - I'm simply being helpful to the folks who seem confused
I'm not necessarily defending it... nor am I against it

Long before the minimum wage bills bounced around the halls in Olympia, Seattle was already a testing ground for the likes of several department stores in the market - for example Sears couldn't figure out why their King County (Seattle Metro) store had trouble getting employees they could hardly man the sales floor

Turns out Sears Chicago HQ had a national rule for their store managers about paying minimum wage...
Except: Nobody was paying minimum wage in Department stores in Seattle

So Sears was the odd man out...
The Seattle market set the price on its own - Olympia is simply trying to hammer home what was already happening organically on its own

Ritzville is an adorable farming community (quaint & friendly) gas station stop on the way to somewhere else

The most recent bill passed by the house in February is a state wide increase to $12/hour by 2017. :coffee:

I didn't know that about the Ritzville Starbucks. Then again, it's practically a bedroom community of Issaquah along the coffee trail through drive over country and those farm kids need gas money to go to Spokane, get the prerequisite skinny jeans and get faux-hawks for working at Starbucks.

I wonder if the indie coffee shop in town is still open?

Hmmm...

The bill would increase the state’s minimum wage to $10 per hour in 2015, $11 per hour in 2016, and finally to $12 per hour in 2017. After that, the wage would again be tied to the consumer price index.

Oh well,

Hard to say. Min wage increases tend to not increase unemployment but it will prevent higher wage workers from getting raises.

A good chunk of minimum/near minimum wage workers, no to low skill teenagers-early 20s, in HS or college, working their 1st job(s), living at home with mommy & daddy, don't need, nor do they warrant, being paid $15 an hr. Heck, maybe not even $10 an hr, even in Seattle. That isn't f'ing over the peasants.

My God you are a dumb fuck.

The article is stating that IF the minimum wage was increased to $10.10 the average age of the minimum wage earner would be 35. :dunce:

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (not some far-left think tank where Joe Biden's former chief economist is a senior fellow), 71% of minimum wage earners are 30 or under. Statistically impossible for the average age to be 35. Not even close. :dunce: :dunce: :dunce: :dunce:

On a side note, Wall Street bonuses alone from 2013 were far greater than the wages earned by the 1,000,000 Americans who work full time for minimum wage.

Can our economy afford increased wages?

2013 BLS data, page 10 of statistical tables:
-11% of those 16-24 earned minimum wage or less (was 19.5% of 16-19). Doesn't include 15 year olds in data, who would certainly be much higher, maybe a majority at minimum wage or below.
-2.7% 25 and above made minimum wage or below

Average age, is 35, median age is 30.
My God you are a dumb ****.

Its that 6.93 math densedawg uses in Illinois..

Well, apparently not too many people have even thought of that. In all the state min wage debates over the last few years I haven't seen that debated or on any of the ballots. They have graduated min wage laws in some of Europe. I'm against any increase in the fed min wage because I don't think there should be any fed minimum wage; every state should be free to set their own rate. But a compromise to raising the fed min wage or at the state level, it wouldn't be too difficult to implement a stepped min wage. Could be 3-4 steps. Bottom step could be for say 15-17, the next step for say 18-20, and then one for 21 and above. Or 4 steps, with the 3rd 21-24, and the top step for everyone 25 and above.

Australia's (1 AUD = about $1.30 US)

UK (1 GBP = about $1.47)
Apprentice 2.73 *
Under 18: 3.79
18-20: 5.13
21 and over: 6.50

*Apprentices aged 16 to 18 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. All other apprentices are entitled to the National Minimum Wage for their age.

And of course for jobs that get majority of wages in tips it should be lower, like it is in 43 states (Washington is one of the 7 where it isn't).
