The facts have a well-known liberal bias.

Post by Skjellyfetti »

:coffee:
"Now, sometimes, because the news cycle is so quick, we forget how all this came about and the debates that we had last year, or two years, or four years, or six years ago. I just want everybody to remember that at every step as we made policies, as we made this progress, we were told by our good friends, the Republicans, that our actions would crush jobs, and explode deficits, and destroy the country. I mean, I want everybody to do a fact-check and go back to 2009, 2010, ’11, ’12, ’13 -- just go back and look at the statements that were made each year by these folks about all these policies. Because apparently they don’t remember.

"But the facts are before us. The economy kept growing. The stock market has more than doubled, restoring the 401(k)s of millions of people. Our deficits are down by two-thirds. I always find it curious that when a Democrat is president, deficits go down; a Republican is president and then deficits are going up, and yet they try to take on the mantle of fiscal probity.

"Our auto industry is firing on all cylinders. None of this is an accident. It’s not an accident that America is creating jobs faster than at any time since the last time a Democrat was president. It’s not an accident that our manufacturers are creating jobs for the first time since the last time a Democrat was president. It’s not an accident that health care inflation is running at the lowest rate in almost 50 years, and that our deficits are falling faster than they have in 60 years."
The "economy kept growing." Official data on gross domestic product from the Commerce Department shows that the economy has been growing robustly in recent months. (Here’s a summary chart.) In fact, it’s been growing so robustly that Republicans have been trying to claim credit for it, a view we have been skeptical of.

The "stock market has more than doubled." On Jan. 20, 2009, the day Obama took office, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 7,949.09. On Feb. 19, 2015, it stood at 17,985.77. That’s more than twice as much.

"Deficits are down by two-thirds." We recently checked Obama’s claim that we've seen "our deficits cut by two-thirds" and found it Mostly True.

"America is creating jobs faster than at any time since the last time a Democrat was president." We recently checked Obama’s claim that the economy is "creating jobs at the fastest pace since 1999," which is when Bill Clinton, a Democrat, was president. We rated Obama’s claim True.

"Our manufacturers are creating jobs for the first time since the last time a Democrat was president." We didn’t check this claim before, but a quick look at Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that, except some small and brief upward blips in 2004, Obama is right. Manufacturing employment has been rising, slowly but surely, since 2010. We have also checked Obama’s claim that "factories are opening their doors at the fastest pace in almost two decades." We rated that Mostly True.

"Health care inflation is running at the lowest rate in almost 50 years." We have reported that data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis that shows health care inflation, as of the end of 2013, was about 1 percent per year — the lowest since the early 1960s.

"Our deficits are falling faster than they have in 60 years." When Obama claimed that "our deficits are falling at the fastest rate in 60 years," we rated it True. (And for readers seeking a refresher course on the "deficit" and the "debt," here’s a rundown.)

Actually the article makes a reasonable case for a third term; and I'm still filling my pick up for under $40. Isn't that great, Baldy? John? :thumb:

The deficit peaked with Bush's last budget at $1.413 trillion.

2014 deficit: $483 billion.

Politifact just said that the stimulus has shrunk since Obama assumed office. That part is right.

Of course, a lot of people conveniently leave out this part of politifact's analysis...
Experts told us that while Obama's math may be correct, it's missing some important caveats.

First, it's important to note that the deficit swelled in 2009 (hence the steady drop). In 2008, the deficit was $458 billion, or 3.1 percent of GDP. Those deficits are smaller than the ones the country is facing today. The 2009 fiscal year represented a huge jump in the deficit, partly because of the massive stimulus program to jumpstart the cratering economy.

"This is not to say that that large deficit was his fault, but if one used the 2008 deficit as a frame of reference, the comparison would be quite different," said Alan Auerbach, University of California Berkeley professor of economics and law.
The devil is in the details. The baseline used in showing Obama supposedly cut the deficit was created by his own Megaton Stimulus Bill.

I think you meant deficit instead of stimulus?

The 2009 budget was George Bush's last budget and also including things like TARP, lower than expected revenues due to the financial crisis, etc.

As the paragraph after you stopped your copy and paste says:
Also, some economists we consulted pointed out that the 2009 fiscal year was Obama’s first year in office, and so not necessarily a good starting point since he had little control over the spending in that year.
It also was 2.8% of GDP in 2014 and was 3.1% of GDP in 2008. So, still an improvement if you use 2008 instead of 2009. ;)

I wrote shortly before Obama took office that he was in good shape in terms of perception because he was going to take over right when things were near a low point. Things will always cycle up and down so that if a President takes over when things are way "up" he's at risk in terms of perception because odds are they're going to go down at least at some point. If he takes over as Obama did when things are way down and everybody knows it the odds are that things are going to get better. It's kind of like taking over at 5 pm and having people blame you for the sun going down vs. taking over a 4 am and having people praise you because the sun came up. Not quite to that level of complete real lack of control but that's the idea.

And this is not something I'm just saying now. I wrote it on this message board before he took office. In fact, I would have to say it took longer for the benefit of his timing in taking over to be realized than I thought it would.

Here are some facts that do not have a either a liberal or a conservative bias: One cannot say that the economy is better at any particular time as the result of any particular President being in office at that time than it wold be if whoever that President won the election against was President. Like right now. Whatever the economy is doing now, it might be doing better if Obama had never taken office. Or it might be worse. No way to know.

That's why another thing I've always said is that I think it's a real shame that so many people vote according to how they perceive the economy to be doing at any particular time.

There's also the question of whether or not doing what one perceives as best for the economy at a particular moment is in the long term interest of the country.
