The "Coffee" thing is window dressing...agencies have been doing similar PR programs for decades under many names. The distrust that has developed is an unintentional symptom resulting from post-9/11 militarization BOTH by govt. agencies AND civilians. Govts'. domestic militarization was an appropriate and necessary response to prepare for addl. terror incidents. The public, likewise, for safety reasons and also fearing increased "gun control" measures, have also REASONABLY, EXPECTEDLY, chosen to "arm themselves".
The mistake made was DHS focusing on domestic malcontents and political organizations, AND FURTHER, use of covert, military style, "black helicopter", press-blackout, operations THROUGHOUT AMERICAN COMMUNITIES, while enforcing run-of-mill criminal violations, under the guise of "officer safety" concerns. The "threat" exists PRIMARILY through foreign religious groups; NOT through the, "Upper Peninsula Sons of Patriots".

American public safety organizations SHOULD NEVER overtly act with the intention of INTIMIDATING the general, law abiding public. Herein lies the key to this problem.

We're witnessing the results of a self-feeding (escalating) cycle of fear and distrust. Sitting around, drinking coffee while patronizing and telling lies or half-truths to the public will only make the situation worse.

You're a fucking idiot.

The distrust we're primarily concerned about started several hundred years ago with the enslavement of Africans. BTW, another example of capitalism at its pinnacle.

White people have no problem with cops.

Reuben booked guys for being more than one deep at a coffee shop

he'd be saying we did community policing before there was a name for it

Let's face it- 85 percent of the population are not concerned about the police, and are in no fear of being "harrassed" by them

I can hear ol Reuben right now

Cops are members of Rotary, Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce, Charity boards, charity events, school boards, neighborhood groups and a litany of other endeavors where there's seems to also be a dearth of color, at least in my community. Minorities were underrepresented in these groups, even with coordinated and sometimes expensive campaigns to increase diversity.

May be different in other communities.

I find it interesting that the board Republicans oppose this. I figured you guys would support the police trying to improve relations with the community.

It's not the 85% of the population that resist arrest or are raised to not trust the police. It's the minority committing crimes.

This scheme is idealistic and implies people hate cops and cops need to get out more, which is false.

Board conks try to be more pragmatic. In this case theyre right.

The vast majority of citizens like cops.

Perhaps cops visiting prisons or juvenile detention facilities to have coffee with inmates would be a better start.

Reuben Kincaid took Danny Partridge under his wing for years yet ultimately failed to prevent him from a life of crime.

Good cops having coffee with bad cops would be a good thing too.

By the time you figure out one is bad, it's too late.

We got rid of guys pretty fast at CPD, but even there we had to have cause.

I respect the police and everything they do, but i am also aware that i have a shorter leash than others when it comes to interactions with them for obvious reasons. I was pulled over once with my wife and was handcuffed and basically accused of kidnapping her because she was asleep on our ride back upstate one night.

Honestly, the fewer times i cross paths with them the better. That's just societal norms for ya. :ohno:

They may have suggested that they were doing an investigative detention on you because they had a suspicion that she may have been incapacitated. If they had "accused" you, you would have been charged.

They were just trying to help a sister out!

I'm a bit perplexed by the silence of the same crowd with respect to the corrupt unions that protect bad cops. :coffee:

Then you're pretty easily perplexed, given the number of posts I have made on the matter.

But by all means, continue to plop your perplexed nuggets here
