Oh I love the Tesla. I think it's an amazing car. I'd choose one over a Corvette every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
But, "on paper", the Tesla should have killed the Corvette. The Tesla is AWD and produces over 200 more horsepower (allegedly) than the modified Vette.
Plus it doesn't have a traditional torque curve. The torque is basically 100% output instantly. Electric motors can and will put internal combustion motors to shame. The thing is, when will we have the infrastructure to support them, and do customers want silent sports cars?

That's probably what the horse sellers said to Diesel, Benz, and Daimler.

Wake me up when one approaches half ton towing and payload territory (say 10k towing/2k payload) for under 50k.

When will these electric cars have the ability to tow heavy loads for 300 miles? Like he said, wake us up when this stupid subject is a viable option to the real world. :jack:

the U.S. Navy is investigating the flight to ensure the aviator complied with all FAA and U.S. Navy regulations.”

The “familiarization flight” requires the pilot to fly by looking outside the aircraft instead of relying on instruments, and this involved transitioning to a lower altitude
Got a chuckle out of that. The pilot knew exactly what he was doing.

When I was Senior Air Director at Combined Arms Exercises (Marine Corps war games in the Mojave), we always got some leeway on the last day to have some fun with the pilots. It was tradition to order these familiarization flights, or what we'd called "low level reconnaissance" with the last section of aircraft on station when the ground war concluded. Because we were a comm unit, he were normally set up on a hill. We'd call in the highest obstacle (usually our HF antenna at 25 ft or so) and the pilots would come over our position so low that you felt it. It was very fun to watch the folks we were co-located with who were not on the frequency and didn't know what was coming. Lots of ducking and diving and holding of ears. :D

I continue to think the biggest limiting factors impeding "consumer friendliness" are the recharging aspect and the range for recharge. I think it'll eventually be overcome. But I don't think it's been overcome at this point. People are used to pulling into one of countless gas stations that are located all over the place when they are low and completely "recharging" in a couple of minutes. Right now Tesla is crowing about having a total of 366 super charging stations in the whole country right now and it takes 30 minutes to bring the battery up enough to regain about 60% of the fully charged range. And the fully charged range still ain't that great to begin with. It's a lot better than it's been in past electric cars but, for example, my wife's Ford Explorer is a friggin' SUV and it's got a highway range of about 450 miles on a tank of gas. 270 miles of range on a full charge and substantially less than that if it's cold is not real great by comparison.

And, again, when my wife nears the end of a full "charge" after 400+ miles she can pull into a gas station just about anywhere without having to worry about planning her trip so as to be near one when the time comes and "recharge" COMPLETELY instead of to 60% in less than 5 minutes.

Like I said I think the obstacles will be overcome in time but right now the charging time and range issues are still significant.

Maybe Tesla should look into getting some cars into NASCAR road races. I say "road races" because, at least by my reading of the artcile at http://nascar.about.com/cs/nascar101/a/racelength.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; those involve about 220 miles of driving so they'd be in the Tesla's range without having to recharge. Obviously if a race is long enough to require a recharge the Tesla is toast so the road races would be the thing.

I read that their consumer cars are "software limited" to a top speed of 130 mph but they could get rid of that for their NASCAR models. Of course going faster would probably mean burning more energy so that darned recharging time problem might rear its ugly head even in a 220 mile race.

You're talking about a niche capability. The avg consumer isn't towing heavy loads.
