High Risk/Reward Transfer to McNeese State

The 6-foot-2, 310-pound defensive tackle was a U.S. Army All-American out of Carthage (Texas) High School and started the final six games of the regular season as a true freshman at A&M in 2013.
His behavior off the field was highly questionable at times.

Golden was dismissed by Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin last June when he and teammate Darian Claiborne were charged with aggravated robbery after allegedly holding up three men who had agreed to buy marijuana from them. Both players previously had been suspended for the duration of spring practice by Sumlin.

What the heck. I'm not a big fan of this sort of thing but we'll see. It's true that a dominant defensive tackle, if he turns out to be that, completely changes the game.

Now this kid from TX A&M I see coming out of HS was rated a 4 star, #8 at his position, #130 overall by Rivals. Taking that level of proven talent is tempting, and I'm for giving 2nd chances, (not necessarily 3rd or 4th, which it sounds like with both of these kids), but the optics of it look real bad. According to the article he was already suspended from the team for an unmentioned reason when he was charged with the aggravated robbery. And now he has domestic abuse battery charges stemming. Sounds like the McNeese HC is really sticking his neck out If the kid from TX A&M gets in more trouble its going to look real bad for McNeese. Could get the HC fired..

On the other hand IF he stays out of trouble, stays healthy, and over the next 3 seasons makes All Southland 2 to 3 times, is an All American by next year or 2017, & early round 2018 draft pick, its going to look like a good move.

Same thing for Spence. If he gets in trouble again its going to look terrible for EKU, and JMU fans will be saying thank goodness we didn't take that guy. On the other hand if he stays out of trouble and stays healthy, dominates at this level, is an All American and early round draft pick, it will look like a great move for EKU, and JMU fans will be saying too bad we didn't take him...

Yes I agree but I think I can see the temptation. Especially with a defensive tackle. I don't know if others would agree but I think it's even harder to get big, dominant defensive tackles at the FCS level than it is to get dominant defensive ends. They are just downright hard to find. At least that's how it seems to be in this area of the country.

And when you do get one it's a big deal because they collapse the offensive line in the middle and it really screws the offense up. Also puts interior pressure on the quarterback.

I don't know if it'd get Viator fired from McNeese if he screws up but one never knows. There is already some grumbling about Viator because he doesn't get McNeese to the playoffs as frequently as the McNeese community had gotten used to seeing the Cowboys get to the playoffs then when he has gotten them there they've lost their first game every time and the scores haven't even been close. Kind of a weird thing because he has the most consecutive winning seasons of any head coach in McNeese history but his lack of post season success has some people ready to see him go.

Not me. I think he's had awful luck with injuries and I think if you look at how some of his teams have looked early in the season before the injuries took their toll you can see a lot of potential. But there are people who are ready.

I don't see how if they don't pan out it's "terrible for the program". It seems like these risks are taken quite a bit and often times don't work out. Just part of the game.

The question is should a program be taking a guy with a aggravated robbery and domestic assault & battery? If he gets into more trouble that is a black eye on the program and the HC.
