I mean somebody who was truly for less spending might wonder how much spending the world's largest producer of oil really needs to be doing on keeping mid-east oil safe. Maybe cut back to only 500 bases in 100 countries ...

We can quit spending $$ on keeping Mid East oil safe as soon as your fellow liberals quit blocking production off both coasts, in the eastern Gulf, in some Alaskan waters, in ANWR, and other resource rich govt lands where it's blocked. Govt could be getting all that lease $$. All that royalty $$. All that tax revenue. But instead, liberal policies mean we will continue to get a big chunk from the Mid East with more military involvement, continuing to line the pockets of oil sheiks..

It's the "wealthy." If you consider the "middle 60 percent" as of 2011 to be the "middle class" they contributed 30 percent to total tax revenues while the top 20 percent contributed 69 percent. To ssay that the "wealthy" got a "soft ride" under such circumstances is ridiculous.

And you could get rid of the military entirely and it wouldn't solve our problem. Yes, we could reduce military spending. But the fundamental problem is the idea that government is responsible for guaranteeing everyone's individual well being. Spending on that effort dwarfs military spending. You could eliminate military spending entirely and we'd still have a huge deficit most years.

This is wrong right from the get go John. You need to reassess your definition of middle class and then resubmit when you have a better understanding. Here's a partial hint: the upper 20% is a meaningless. 99% of that 20% are pip-squeak $250,000/yr type working stiffs; upper middle class, some verging on rich. Rich is a very different thing than wealthy.
