Obama Proposes Free CC
Idea stolen from a conk governor…
I'm in favor of this as I think we need more students going the vocational training route versus classic college education.
What say you.

Re: Obama Proposes Free CC
I've heard this but didn't see where the money was going to come from. I like the idea, but "free" doesn't exist. This is just one more thing we're going to pay for. If we're going to stop giving money to countries and invest it in education, ok. But where will the new funds come from?
Btw, South Carolina already does this. We use money from the lottery (essentially a tax onthe poor) and anyone that qualifies essentially doesn't pay for tuition or books at a South Carolina tech school/community college. The problem, as I have seen and heard, is that kids will take the money and drop out. SC also has the Hope Scholarship which most kids in SC get. I think you need to have a 3.0 GPA and it's only good for your freshman year. But its only $3000.
This scares me, give Congress a good idea and they'll inflate and destroy it.The Institute for College Access and Success, which is typically in step with the Obama administration, called the proposal “a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” Among the problems, TICAS says, is that the more substantial costs of college — living expenses, textbooks and transportation — are typically left out of the deal.

It is not my job to make sure some dimwit in Tennessee or Washington state gets educated at a LOCAL community college, especially at the tune of $35,000,000,000 per year. Education is a local and state issue. The last thing we need is more centralized planning and it's inevitable mandates and stipulations by the feds. The Hope Scholarship/Grant has been good for the state of Georgia, and if Tennessee wants to do it, great.

You can get free college today. Just join the military.
But on a more general note, I'd be all for this if there was some kind of tit for tat where the individuals had to give time BACK to the country, whether it be through military service, peace corps, or some other organization that helps give back to the country.
As sticky bunz said, nothing is "free".

Education helps us all, Bladder. Those of us in the provider states don't mind if those of you in the taker states use the money on education. Problem is that it so clearly isn't being used to educate.
Besides, if it makes you that mad you can always send your kids to college for free in Norway or Germany ....

CCBC near my house is practically free anyway. I took several courses there for something obsurd like $60 a credit. If that.

Please tell me how big the budget deficit is and how much debt your state has accumulated?

Exactly what I was thinking. Kids going to public school here in Utah can graduate high school with an associates degree for free if they are willing to do the work for it.

Re: Obama Proposes Free CC
The entire premise of the skills gap is a falsehood, so I'm tepid about this to begin with. The problem lies with the employers. They wail and gnash their teeth about the lack of skills among applicants yet they do next to NOTHING about training those people and, instead, gravitate, as Conks are wont to do, to holding a gun to the government's head (addicted to the welfare teat as they are) for funds for such training. Have seen it in a few stops in my career, even by multi-billion dollar food conglomerates.
These companies KNOW the skills their applicants need, have the knowledgeable people, and CAN afford to train them, especially in this period of obscene profits (GObama!!).
Training (which is nothing more than education) is an INVESTMENT, whether you're a state or a corporation, but, too often, especially where Conks hold influence, it is treated as an EXPENSE, and, thus, a form of waste.
Shame on the corporations.

Re: Obama Proposes Free CC
Not to get all kyjelly on you, but my first question would be trying to get to the root cause of why education inflation is 4x the CPI and growing.

I've said numerous times that the community college system is a fantastic, low cost option to get to a good career. The world will always need people working in the trades, not a bunch of 4 yr. poly sci majors (that's what most of the folks I knew in school chose when they had no idea what they wanted to do).

And we should be sending as many as possible down that path at the start of high school as GFSU mentioned.

Depends on what you mean by CCs. I'm very much in favor of sending fewer people to college and more to vocational and technical programs. A lot of these jucos, though, are just high schools for adults.

Re: Obama Proposes Free CC
I agree with this. Most of the CC's in this area have little to no vocational aspect to them - they are the glorified second high school. I don't see the value in anyone getting 4 years of a general education in a liberal arts study at one of these places. At the end you have a slightly more educated person who can't do anything more than they could do when they entered the school and either they or the taxpayer are now slightly poorer for it.Pwns wrote:Depends on what you mean by CCs. But to take the other point from another poster, again, why are college costs continuing to increase far in advance of the inflationary pressures? Again, who's benefitting from the government coming in and guaranteeing more and more loans and providing more and more funding for people to go to college? If I was a college and I found out every student applying could and would get a $5000 stipend from the government to attend of course I would raise my tuition by about $5000 or so and just ask the government to send it straight to my campus rather than wasting time and routing it through the student over time. It's funny that all of these "not for profit" colleges seem to have no issue with chasing that money.

If you want something you work for it.
We need to be raising generations of people willing to work instead of generations of people willing to take stuff for free. If you accept things for free you should be ashamed of yourself, you are a loser and are stealing from the rest of people that pull the wagon.
Sorry, but if people get free education then I quit paying taxes.............unless its ex military then I am cool with it, they deserve more than the lazy PS3 playing cell phone losers in the inner city.
