US Catholic League blames French Cartoonists for their death

Post by dbackjon »

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wor ... slaughter/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In the aftermath of the deadly assault on the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical newspaper, much of the world has rallied in solidarity with the publication, its irreverent cartoonists and their right to free speech.

But not everyone is so supportive. Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, a U.S. organization that "defends the rights of Catholics," issued a statement titled "Muslims are right to be angry." In it, Donohue criticized the publication's history of offending the world's religiously devout, including non-Muslims. The murdered Charlie Hebdo editor Stephane Charbonnier "didn’t understand the role he played in his [own] tragic death," the statement reads.

"Had [Charbonnier] not been so narcissistic, he may still be alive," Donohue says, in what must be one of the more offensive and insensitive comments made on this tragic day.

Charbonnier was well aware that something like this could happen, and was quoted as saying he'd rather die standing up than live on his knees. :coffee:

Joltin Joe pretty much parrots Don Honohue in every debate.

The fucking pope could strangle a baby in front of the entire world and Donohue would blame the atheist and Jeff Anderson.

I think it was neither. I think he died on his ass, as he was sitting down in a conference room.

Well, in this guy's defense, he did also say in the same statement:
"Killing in response to insult, no matter how gross, must be unequivocally condemned. That is why what happened in Paris cannot be tolerated," says Donohue.
I disagree with his stance on free speech. These guys were well within their rights to grossly and horribly lampoon people as they did and they should have been able to do that without dying for it. Criticize and ostracize them all you want with your own speech, but recognize that they can say what they want to.

Uh, yeah. This.

But remember, according to our White House, these aren't "muslim" terrorists.

Sure. They can say what they want. I have no problem with THAT.
They can also use their own money for security and not ask for taxpayer-funded police to stand guard.

Donohue should have said nothing, unless it was an outright condemnation of the murders.

There is no logical connection between the offensive satire of the magazine and the murderous violence directed at its employees.

Satire, even offensive satire, is legal and protected speech. Your remedies for offensive satire, of which you disapprove, are to criticize it, ignore it (usually the best remedy), or respond with offensive satire of your own (usually a bad choice, but the choice of preference here ;) ).

To say it was their "narcissism" which contributed to their death, well :ohno:

Shouldn't be a surprise given his previous statements. Poor representative of Catholics in the US

So now you atheist cocksuckers are making fun of Catholics because they tell the truth?

Hebdo employees got killed because they were not able to defend themselves. Period. They pretty much deserved it since they were unarmed.

We've already covered Donohue's comments other thread, but dumbass had to start another one. And Donohue also said, as already stated in the other thread with the rawstory link,
“...Killing in response to insult, no matter how gross, must be unequivocally condemned. That is why what happened in Paris cannot be tolerated..."

You should probably take a cue from Joltin Joe's response and quit defending Donahue. :coffee:

Wait a minute. :suspicious:

If I go downtown and yell, "Nigger", I'm going to be fighting for my life.

After the tussle is over, I will be put in handcuffs and arrested for inciting a riot. The PC police, and the real police, will attempt to blame me/charge me for starting the violence and convict me of a hate crime.

Very few people will be saying that I should be held up as beacon of free speech. :coffee:

OK, meet me in Chester, PA this weekend. Wait, let's wait a couple weeks until DSU gets back in the area...we'll need someone to tell the the locals it is just an experiment. :thumb:

And, yeah...it is the same thing. Free speech...and the ability to take a joke...or an insult, without resorting to violence. But, in only one case, most Libs would say that the one with the words deserved his fate.

Hey, I hope those Muslin whack jobs have their heads slowly sawed off...but I certainly don't feel sorry for some Liberal clowns that make money taking pot shots at the core of other people's beliefs. If you are willing to attack others, then you should be willing to accept, and certainly not be surprised, that others don't always want to follow your genteel rules of engagement.

They are both free speech, but direct confrontation is different than a cartoon. It's like shouting fire in a crowded theater versus drawing a picture of it.

I am surprised on your take here though. Ironically, these muslim (and most certainly conservative) martyrs, making liberty martyrs out of the cartoonists and all.

I think Donahue has the right to his own opinion. I think the cartoonist are partly responsible for their own deaths, by repeatingly provoking the Muslins. But they weren't solely insulting Islam. They insulted Christianity and Judism and every other group of peoples. The BLAME is completely on these wack job radical muslims and their Imams.

I agree with Joltin Joe, the best way to deal with these insults, like Piss Christ, is to just ignore it. To respond only pours gas on the fire for more.

These French cartoonists are like the South Park creators of France - they take equal opportunity shots, or caricatures in this case, at their targets, frequently religious targets, so I get where Donohue is coming from.

I agree with Cluck - it's nothing new from radical Muslims on pictures of Mohammed, especially considering France's geographical location & geopolitical situation it's inviting a reaction which unfortunately for them cost lives.
