Near Albany, Voorheesville Superintendent Teresa Thayer Snyder said her district lost $30,000 in the first three months.

The program didn't even make it through the school year after students repeatedly complained about the small portions and apples and pears went from the tray to the trash untouched.
Districts that leave the program are free to develop their own guidelines. Voorheesville's chef began serving such dishes as salad topped with flank steak and crumbled cheese, pasta with chicken and mushrooms, and a panini with chicken, red peppers and cheese.

I never ate school cafeteria once in high school. Sophomore year it was a dozen blueberry donuts from Excell Foods. Junior year it was onion rings and corn dogs from Safeway. Senior year it was a Belly Buster and tots or Whammy and fries from Zips or Lenny's Drive Ins.

I guess you can't legislate taste or nutrition.

I ate at the cafeteria almost every day, and ate greasy pizza and soggy french fries daily and never gained a pound. Of course, we'd throw frisbee or football after lunch for the remainder of lunch and then I'd be off to cross country or track practice after school if not playing pick up basketball or football after school.

I've talked with a number of people about what's happening with seemingly increased obesity, cancer, diabetes, etc. in our kids and general population. It most probably points to either environmental factors, lower activity, or something in the food supply itself (I'm talking to you Monsanto) with HFCS or GMO's.

She has good intentions but there's a better way. A few counties in South Carolina are paid their cafeteria workers to attend a "culinary" boot camp over the summer to learn how to cook meals that kids will love with healthy ingredients. My father-in-law was a chef instructor and the biggest hit was quinoa mac & cheese. That was over the summer. As I hear it now from friends who have kids in school, the newer menu is well received. You can feed children a healthy meal at school but don't forget something very important...these are children! Don't waste tax dollars when you can essentially cook healthy meals and the kids are none the wiser.

I didn't eat the slop they served in Maryland in 8th grade.
